Alamo Group Inc. CNC Machine Operator in Wooster, Ohio

Formerly known as Rayco Manufacturing, and now part of the Alamo Group Snow & Ice Team, we manufacture heavy duty snow and ice removal equipment.

The CNC Machine Operator must be able to set up and operate multi-axes CNC lathe machine tool and CNC mill machine tool do their own program writing and editing that produces quality work that conforms to tolerances specified on drawings with little to no supervision.

Tooling instructions and standard charts applying knowledge of machining methods. Also analyzes specifications and computes dimensions according to knowledge of product, subsequent processing, shop mathematics and layout procedures. Processes work orders and determines when to change consumables. Perform operations on work pieces using assigned machine(s) and light maintenance as needed.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  1. Read blueprints, study drawings, sketches, or job orders for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances and tooling instructions such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determine sequence of operations, and plans layouts.

  2. Select, positions and secures tool in tool holder (chuck, collet, tool post, etc.). Positions and secures work pieces in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps or wrenches.

  3. Operates controls to position tool and work piece in relation to each other and sets specified feeds, speeds and depth of cut; examines work pieces and verifies such requirements as dimensions and proper square measurements, using rule, square and straight edge.

  4. Sets up fixture or feeding device, starts machine and turns hand wheel to feed tool or work piece or vice versa, and engages feed.

  5. Observes operation of machine and verifies conformance of machine work piece to specifications using measuring instruments.

  6. Multi-machining, editing and simple programming required in some areas (CNC machines).

  7. Some machine maintenance is required.

  8. Trains other employees in the set-up and operation of machines.

  9. Lifts and positions work pieces in the machine manually or with a hoist.

  10. Verifies position with measuring instruments and determines reference points and computer layout dimension.

  11. Complete all necessary documentation accurately.

  12. Understands machines and tooling. Monitors tool condition write up maintenance requests for timely repairs on general tool maintenance.

  13. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  1. Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan and set up layouts.

  2. Ability to use fixed gauges, calipers and micrometers.

  3. Strong shop math skills: practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.

  4. Knowledge and ability to set and program various machine shop machines.

  5. Troubleshooting skills; assessing machined parts, structures and components to identify errors.

  6. Ability to read safety rules; instructions in the use of maintenance of shop tools and equipment; methods and procedures in mechanical drawings and layout work.

  7. Ability to work safely and follow all safety guidelines.

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED preferred.

  2. Three years of previous machining and operation experience.

Working Conditions:

  1. Ability to lift, push or pull up to 35 pounds alone and greater than 35 pounds with assistance.

  2. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time (up to 8+ hours) as required by tasks being completed.

  3. Ability to wear appropriate PPE, including hearing/eye protection, gloves and safety shoes.

  4. Must be able to work overtime as needed to complete job assignments.

  5. Ability to work in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing plant environment.

  6. Frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching and climbing as required by tasks being completed.
