Job Description

Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory as a Heavy Equipment Operator at the Bettis Atomic Laboratory location! Operate all heavy-duty mobile equipment such as tractors, excavators and other heavy construction equipment performing the full range of the machine's capabilities. Perform buildings and grounds maintenance work including excavations, surface preparation, repair, and resurfacing. Work areas include but are not limited to paved and unpaved roads, concrete, asphalt, etc. Operation of heavy equipment is required for these site operations and repair activities. Operate powered mobile equipment including backhoe, bobcat, aerial lifts, excavator, and other site equipment necessary to perform buildings and grounds maintenance and masonry work. Perform all operations for which the equipment was designed. Operate equipment efficiently and safely observing the capabilities and limitations of the equipment.  Responding to trouble calls related to immediate issues to help maintain continuity of operations. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operation. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Determine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform a job. Receive written or oral instructions from supervisor.  Work from complex drawings and engineering sketches. Follow equipment data sheet or job specification requirements. Operate a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, skid-steer, backhoes, excavators, loaders, bulldozer, trailers, etc. Employee will be responsible for loading hauling and material movement. Operate backhoe to assist in trash compaction. Operate excavator for utility repairs and installation. Clean ice and snow from roadways and walking surfaces. Load gravel, dirt and sand with mechanical loader. Assistance to Mason - Cement Finisher is required for buildings and grounds maintenance work including excavations, surface preparation, repair, and resurfacing. Assisting with general interior and exterior concrete pouring and finishing work and form building, general brick and block installation and repair, common plaster installation and repair, minor roadway paving and repair, general grout application for machinery installation, and general repair of concrete surfaces using synthetic-type industrial products. Recommend and assist in the specification of materials needed to replenish on-hand parts and materials, and parts and materials needed to complete job assignments. Install new or replacement material as required by engineering changes or as deemed appropriate as skill of the craft. ADDITIONAL GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES Follow general established procedures and select appropriate tools and materials. Follow rough engineering sketches and detailed complex drawings. Maintain clean, safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals and waste. Must be able to qualify and maintain qualifications including but not limited to asbestos worker, radiological contamination worker, silica worker and other industrial hygiene areas as necessary. Perform work in accordance with applicable safety, environmental, radiological and security requirements. Perform Continuing Training as required.  Employees will attend training and other programs to enhance their skills, as requested Receive oral or written instructions from management. Perform equal or lower classified work as irected.  Assignment of such work will be within the occupational progression insofar as possible.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

High school or vocational school graduate or the equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform general mathematics of the variety usually learned in a high school or vocational school course. Must pass a periodic physical examination. AND Heavy Equipment operations with at least 4 years of experience that must include continuous daily operations of various types of heavy equipment of the type required for building and ground maintenance tasks (backhoe, skid-steer, bulldozer, aerial lifts, excavator, telehandler, and other site equipment). OR Completion of a state approved certified apprenticeship program resulting in Operator licenses/qualification, and qualification of Journeyman or equivalent in the field of this position (i.e. Local 66) with at least 4 years of experience.

Preferred Skills

Preferred to possess a Journeyman qualification from a recognized trade union in the field of this position.

Pay Range

$39.99 hourly
