Ogemaw County Road Commission Mechanic in West Branch, Michigan

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Shop Foreman

Mechanic will perform repairs on and maintenance of pickups, heavy trucks, heavy road construction and maintenance equipment and special equipment. Utilizes a well-rounded knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical components, hydraulic systems, brakes, welding, cooling and air conditioning systems. Must be proficient with diagnostic software such as Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Allison, CAT ET, Wabco, Service Ranger, and Daimler PartsPro 6. If you are not familiar with specific diagnostic software listed above, please submit a description of diagnostic software that you have specific knowledge of in your resume. Must be able to work well with others.

Examples of Duties:

  • Diagnoses problems using various software
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces
    • Engines ranging from small chainsaw to large tractor diesels
    • Major power train components such as transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, clutches, and drive shafts
    • Major hydraulic components on trucks and heavy equipment such as hydraulic cylinders, valves, and pumps
    • Steering components such as power steering, tie rods, steering gear boxes, drag links, and idler arms
    • Brake shoes, hydraulic cylinders, air brake chambers, and valves.
    • Carburetor, alternators, starters, distributors, generators, and solenoids.
  • Installs on equipment, as necessary, items such as snow plow frames and sanders, underbelly scrapers, wiring including lights, and hydraulic systems, repairs the same
  • Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance work such as replacement of coil packs, spark plugs, fuel filters, and air pollution equipment
  • Performs general maintenance and safety checks, i.e. changing oil, lubrication of moving parts, changing tires, and electrical repairs; makes adjustments using hand tools or special tools
  • May be required to make repairs out on the roads in all types of weather

Job Requirements:

  • High School; with a diploma or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of experience in repairing heavy-duty trucks/construction equipment, etc.
  • Experience in engine electronics on modern equipment desirable
  • CDL with appropriate endorsements (A, N) and current DOT medical card -- if a candidate does not have this, they must be willing to obtain it within 6 months of employment. Will train the right candidate.
