Job Description

The Mississippi River Bridge Near Lansing Project Office is looking to hire a Construction Co-op for the 2025 construction season!

The Mississippi River Bridge Near Lansing is a project involving the construction of a new 1,352-foot-long cantilevered through truss bridge connected to a three span 364-foot-long prestressed precast concrete beam bridge.

During the summer of 2025, the Co-op will conduct inspection and contract administration duties on the Mississippi River Bridge Near Lansing Construction Project to ensure construction work is done in accordance with Iowa DOT plans, specifications, and standards.

During the fall of 2025, the Co-op may continue to work on the Mississippi River Bridge Near Lansing Project in Lansing, Iowa, or they may transfer to the Bridges and Structures Bureau in Ames, Iowa. At the Bridges and structures Bureau, the Co-op will perform structural analyses and structural load ratings of a variety of structures around the state.

What you’ll do:

  • Inspects the complex Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing Construction Project for compliance.

  • Reviewing field construction reports and material certifications, verifying quantities and materials, ensuring compliance with specifications and the use of certified materials, and preparing vouchers and progress reports.

  • Document construction progress and activities by maintaining detailed project records including item progress, materials used, and test results.

  • Develop, manage, and document bolting diagrams and bolt testing procedures.

  • Review steel truss geometry control plans and submittals and inspect as constructed steel members for geometry compliance.

  • Work directly with the Director of the Bridges and Structures Bureau on special structures projects.

  • Perform load rating analysis of structures around the State of Iowa.

  • Overweight permit analysis in Iowa Automated Permitting system (IAPS).

  • Assist in reviewing standard bridge AASHTOWare Bridge Rating input files.

*Iowa DOT will provide material testing certifications

Eligible Majors: Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering

Duration Options:Summer: May-August 2025 Fall: August-December 2025 (40 hours/week). 40 hours/week and overtime may vary.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Completion of at least two years in civil, construction, or structural engineering at an accredited four-year college or university with eligibility for senior status upon return to school.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Completion of Structural Steel Design and Reinforced Concrete Design courses. Student must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
