American Institutes for Research Part-time Indigenous Education Intern - Master's or PhD Students in Washington, District Of Columbia

Overview

Join AIR as a part-time Indigenous Education Intern with AIR’sEducation Systems (https://www.air.org/our-work/education) team and be involved in our longstanding legacy of providing rigorous, impartial evidence-based research and resources on pressing and perennial education issues.

The intern will support a high-stakes research and policy-focused Indigenous student identification project within the United States. The project requires working with state education agencies in 22 states as well as with national Indigenous education experts and stakeholders to identify needs, priorities, and policy recommendations around Indigenous student identification and success in K-12 public schools. Ideally, the intern will use the knowledge and network they gain through this work for a future career in making positive change in Indian country. The intern will be provided with support to attend the annual National Indian Education Association (NIEA) conference. The ideal candidate has:

  • A long-term career interest in Indigenous education, research, and public policy

  • Experience working in or with the K-12 education sphere

  • Experience with American Indian and/or Alaska Native communities, organizations, and ways of knowing

The intern hired for the position may work remotely within the United States (U.S.) or from one of ourU.S. office locations. (https://www.air.org/locations#headquarters) This does not include U.S. territories. This Intern position will be part-time capacity internship from January 1, 2025 to October 31, 2025.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for the position include:

  • Provide expertise and perspective as part of a mixed team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers and technical assistance providers

  • Facilitate groups of stakeholders engaging with complex research and policy questions

  • Assist in the design and planning of qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments including interview protocols, focus group protocols, and surveys

  • Work with data from surveys, interviews, observations, and other sources using appropriate approaches and tools

  • Prepare documents, portions of reports, briefs, charts, and graphs that describe and interpret findings of analyses

  • Communicate effectively, orally or in writing, with clients, partners, and other Indigenous education stakeholders

  • Clearly communicate knowledge of the project purpose and objectives to stakeholders when necessary and represent AIR in a professional manner

  • Support steering committee meeting planning, project meeting planning, event planning, communication, facilitation, and follow-up

  • Work independently and in team-based projects

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Must be a current Master's degree or PhD student, for the duration of the internship, pursuing an advanced degree within Social Sciences (Education, Economics, Psychology, Public Policy, Sociology, etc.)

  • Experience working with American Indian or Alaska Native communities

  • Understanding of Indigenous research methods and concerns

Skills:

  • Strong writing skills

  • Qualitative research skills

  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team

  • Proactive communication and collaboration habits

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing

  • Effective communicator that can work with individuals at all levels and from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a virtual work environment

International students who are studying at an accredited U.S. college or university under F1 visas are eligible to apply under Curricular Practical Training (CPT) stipulations.

This position offers $25-30 per hour. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the organization and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the salary for candidates that are based in the United States.
