Job Summary

The Professional Counselor I, under general supervision, provides academic and career choice counseling to individuals and groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides personal counseling and crisis intervention to individuals, couples, and groups.

  • Engages in counseling related activities including maintaining counseling records, administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories, making referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases.

  • Serves as an expert consultation resource.

  • Responds to requests for information about counseling services, programs, and organizational structure and policies.

  • Provides presentations for student, faculty members, and staff members about counseling services, programs, organization, professional development topics and issues, etc.

  • Assists with organizational and administrative tasks, as requested.

  • Provides academic and career choice counseling to individuals and groups.

  • Consults with students, faculty members, and staff members about students who are in need of academic and career choice counseling.

  • Engages in applied research and evaluation activities. Publishes and/or disseminates the results of research and evaluation efforts.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as liaison with other offices.

  • Serve on committees.

  • Schedule, prepare, provide, and report on conjoint and independent mental health and wellness related outreach on campus, as needed and as approved (i.e. student messaging; design/delivery strategies on posters and bulletins; workshops; information tables; class presentations; speaking assignments; etc.)

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education – Master’s degree in from a regionally accredited college or university in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or other specialty related to job function.

  • Experience – Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Licensure for independent practice in the State of Texas. (LPC, LCDC).

  • Counseling and outreach experience in a university setting.

  • Experience doing veterans counseling and/or drug/alcohol counseling.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

Ability to:

  • Multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Must possess time-management, planning, and organization skills.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Interact effectively and professionally with the University community, general public, and the students served.

  • Work independently and follow-through on all tasks.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Familiarity with campus-related issues (i.e., adults, women, men, Hispanic populations, adjustment, etc.)

Licensing / Professional Certification – Eligible for Texas Licensed Professional Counselor – Associaten (LPC-1) or Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Must maintain licensure for continued employment. Must obtain licensure within 3 years of hire.

Supervision of Others

This position generally does not supervise employees.

Other Requirements

  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • Requires working evening and/or weekend hours and rotating on-call responsibilities, as necessary.

  • Travel may be required.

  • Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions.

  • Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Salary: $48,110/annual
