Duties/Responsibilities: Deploys, configures, maintains, and monitors active data network or converged infrastructure environments and related network equipment.

  • Manages and maintains the Wide Area Network/Local Area Network (WAN/LAN) infrastructure.

  • Provides support in the deployment and configuration of comprehensive routing and switching network designs.

  • Monitors network issues and outages in accordance with directives and guidelines and escalating them based on severity levels.

  • Provides Network Infrastructure, Cyber Transport, and Network Core Services support, including maintaining Network Encryption devices (i.e., TACLANEs providing local Secure Internet Protocol Router Network [SIPRNet] connectivity).

  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots Wi-Fi network and devices connected to Wi-Fi network.

  • Supports information assurance by updating and maintaining content, classification, and protection of organizational Web sites, and Access management.

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and restores technical service and end-user software and hardware, problems, including repairing user desktops, laptops, printers, multi-functional devices (“all-in-one”), desk phones, and wireless devices (Blackberry, cell phones, and mobile Wi-Fi devices); issues related to network access, network storage, email, and test and image desktops and laptops.

  • Provides support for basic customer issues such as solving usage problems and fulfilling service desk requests that need IT involvement.

  • Manages network user accounts on relevant systems and platforms.

  • Provides End User Device Support (Voice, Data, and Video Devices). Performs computer systems maintenance and repair.

  • Maintains servers, software systems, and networks.

  • Diagnoses and resolves hardware, software, firmware, and network problems.

  • Configures, maintains, and upgrades network connection devices, network hardware/software equipment, and automation equipment.

  • Administer user accounts, file permissions, and print queues.

  • Provides technical support to include troubleshooting user operating problems, application problems, system configuration issues and malfunctions, and network operating problems.

  • Provides Information Technology Services Management (ITSM) support, to include Incident/Problem, Change, Service Request and Knowledge Management support.

  • Provides support for Systems Notices, Authorized Service Interruptions (ASI), and scheduled/unscheduled outages.

  • Infrastructure Specialists possess and maintain DoDD 8570.01M/DoDD 8140 IAT II certification, as well as appropriate computing environment certifications.

Minimum/General Experience: This position requires a minimum of six years of experience, of which at least four years must be specialized experience in one of the following: communications software, communications hardware or network specialty. General experience includes all aspects of communication networks. Must demonstrate the ability to work independently or under only general direction.

Communications Hardware specialized experience includes installing, testing, and operating network and computer (host) communications equipment (e.g., switches, modems, controllers, terminals, and multiplexers): using and implementing communications hardware and electrical standards, using communications hardware test and monitoring equipment and analyzing the results.

Communications Software specialized experience includes developing, testing, installing, and operating network and computer (host) communications software (e.g. access method and protocol software, application interfaces, transaction processors, and emulators); using and implementing communications standards.

Network specialized experience includes designing, testing, installing, implementing, and maintaining computer networks; using and implementing network standards, identification and solution of problems, restart/recovery, additions, deletions, and modifications of terminals, hosts, etc., optimization of network costs and performance and implementing accounting and charge back systems.

Functional Responsibilities: Analyzes network characteristics (e.g., traffic, connect time, transmission speeds, packet sizes, and throughput) and recommends procurement, removals, and modifications to network components. Designs and optimizes network topologies and site configurations. Plans installations, transitions, and cutovers of network components and capabilities. Coordinates requirements with users and suppliers.

Minimum Education: A Bachelor’s degree in computer science/systems, information systems/technology, engineering/engineering technology, software engineering/programming, management, natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics or business/finance.

Education and experience requirements may be substituted with:

  • A Master’s Degree (in subjects described above) and five years general experience of which at least three years must be specialized experience.

  • No degree and ten years general experience of which at least eight years is specialized.

Certifications: Infrastructure Specialist / ACE Infrastructure Specialist

  • DoD 8570.01M IAT Level II Certification

  • CCNA or better Certification.
