Description of Duties:

SUNY Polytechnic Institute's College of Engineering's Department of Engineering invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Civil Engineering, with a teaching and research focus in the broad area of Environmental Engineering. The successful applicant will support our ABET accredited B.S. degree program that addresses national and regional workforce needs and offers our graduates excellent employment opportunities. In addition, the department is expected to have a Master's degree program in civil engineering in place in the near future. Collaboration within the newly established Center of Smart Infrastructure and Sustainability (CSIS) is expected, and the successful candidate also will have opportunities to collaborate with other faculty members around the four thematic areas described in SUNY Poly's 2024 Strategic Plan: Materials, Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing; AI and Information Technology; Smart Infrastructure and Sustainability; and Healthcare & Wellbeing.

The successful candidate will: 1) Demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching in the area of environmental engineering and in the lower division engineering sciences. The ability to teach and support courses from a breadth of disciplines within civil engineering is a plus; 2) Have a track record of outstanding academic and scholarly achievements in environmental engineering or a related field; 3) Will be able to develop an externally funded research program.

Preference will be given to candidates with research experience, teaching experience at the collegiate level and a strong background related to and capable of supporting SUNY Poly's interests in the impact of engineering and STEM-related work on modern society. The Civil Engineering program currently consists of four tenure-track faculty members, whose teaching and research expertise includes structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering. The department is in the process of hiring another new tenure-track faculty member with a teaching and research expertise in infrastructure engineering, and it is expected that the successful candidate's research interests would complement the interests of existing Civil Engineering faculty at SUNY Poly.

Specific duties include: 1) Teach and develop curricula for a variety of undergraduate civil engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory settings. Coursework would include environmental engineering and lower division engineering science. The candidate would be responsible for all aspects of the course including grading and assessment. 2) Develop an externally funded scholarly research program in environmental engineering or a related field incorporating graduate and undergraduate students. Funded programs that include academic, industry or government lab/agency collaborations are encouraged. 3) Advise undergraduate students and assist with a variety of student club activities. 4) Work with the engineering faculty to maintain EAC-ABET accreditation. 5) Serve the College and community through outreach activities. During the first two years of the appointment, a reduced teaching load to include two classes per semester can be anticipated, providing an opportunity to establish a research program and develop courses.

Other responsibilities include contributing to the assessment and continued development of Civil Engineering courses, and contributing to the University community through committee service and other activities.

Salary: Assistant Professor $95,000 - $105,000 / Associate Professor $105,000 - $115,000

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized organization and have a record of outstanding academic and scholarly achievements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized organization.
