Educational Requirements: • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Worker or related field preferred • In lieu of Bachelor’s degree at least five (5) years’ experience in volunteer management, social service programs, human resources or related fields; or is certified as a NJ SHIP Counselor with at least one year active counseling experience Experience Requirements: • Experience and understanding of the Medicare program preferred Essential Job Responsibilities and Skills: State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a federally-funded, state-administered program that offers free, one-on-one education and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries of all ages in navigating the complexities of Medicare and other related health insurance options such as Medicare supplement policies, managed care options, prescription drug plans, and low-income assistance programs that help with health and drug costs. SHIP operates in all counties of New Jersey. The SHIP Coordinator for Mercer County is responsible for: • Serving as the point of contact in Mercer County for residents aged 65 and older; those approaching the age of 65; disabled adults ages 18-64 who are eligible for Medicare; and residents who are 65 and older and eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare (called “dual-eligible”) • Providing education and assistance to residents via phone and email within capabilities - including assessing eligibility for low-income programs and referring residents onto appropriate team members (including volunteer SHIP counselors) for in-depth assistance • Managing the existing SHIP volunteer counselors in the county who provide education and assistance about Medicare to residents, receiving and assigning resident referrals and ensuring that each trained counselor provides services to at least five clients per month • Assisting in recruiting new volunteers for the SHIP program, as needed. • Interviewing volunteer counselor candidates, ensuring that new counselors attend SHIP Certification Training with the NJ Division of Aging including completing the Certification Evaluation (exam), and matching new counselors with current counselors for mentoring for six sessions. Assist in providing other needed training for volunteers. • Promoting the SHIP program in the county, including through distributing informational materials from Federal and NJ agencies to other agencies and health/social care professionals • Promoting and supporting open enrollment and outreach events for Medicare beneficiaries, including recruiting volunteers to help at a minimum of one enrollment event during the Medicare Annual Enrollment
