The Environmental Engineer reports directly to the Site EHS Manager and is responsible for supporting the day-to-day safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental management control programs and evaluations for BD in Sumter South Carolina which has over 850 associates and 650,000 sq.feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Participates on the BD Excellence EHS Component Teams to proactively improve safety, environmental and health for our associates, evaluate risks and incidents, and identify areas where costs and loss experience can be improved through new initiatives, root cause and preventative actions, and accurate and timely communication.
Reviews and maintains site strategy, systems, policies, and procedures related to EHS. Conducts periodic safety audits / assessments to evaluate compliance to regulations and facility safety & environmental policies & procedures. Document assessment findings, assists areas with resolving discrepancies.
Coordinates TBRA, HAZOP, FMEA and ergonomic evaluations and assists in implementation of process improvements. Participates with teams to design new and existing processes with hazard minimization and waste reduction as primary objectives.
Reviews and updates as necessary, procedures that provide BMP safety and environmental standards that exceed accepted industry standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OSHA, EPA, FDA GMP’s).
Knowledge of regulatory reporting by Federal, State and local agencies.
Manages the environmental management system for compliance with ISO 14001 certification in the following topics: regulatory compliance in waste management, wastewater discharge, air quality, storage tank management and spill control.
Aligns with all local, state, federal safety laws policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous waste regulations. Complies Follows BD quality and safety policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance and safety principles.
Ensure air contaminates, chemicals, biological agents, or physical hazards are within compliance of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and BDX requirements so associates can perform their job duties without undue risk and effort. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists’ (ACGIH) recommendations will be used as the standard to attain.
Ensure regulatory compliance with all local, state, federal and BDX environmental regulations, policies, permits, and procedures. Be sure data acquisition, recordkeeping, and reporting activities to maintain compliance are properly completed and maintained.
Coordinate and ensure all waste is properly disposed. Enhance recycling efforts to minimize solid waste to the landfill. Be sure scrap product is properly destroyed. Seek out alternatives where possible to reduce the site’s negative environmental impacts.
Use Resource Manager or like program to manage, record, and report site results of the environmental activities. Report on waste stream costs and provide forecast data as needed.
Ensure safe handling of chemicals and waste. Ensure chemical inventories and SDSs are properly managed, and requirements of OSHA’s Hazardous Communication Standard are met.
Coordinate, develop and make effective an ergonomics program that will reduce illnesses and injuries caused by physical hazards. Use ACGIH ergonomic recommendations to evaluate hazards and document improvements when changes are made.
Coordinate, update, maintain, and implement site Emergency Response policies, procedures, and programs. Ensure the effectiveness and awareness of the integrated contingency plan (ICP).
Ensure emergency response for environmental spills, decontamination, and cleanup minimizes hazardous exposures to associates and pollution or harm to the environment.
Coordinate and manage process hazard assessments (PHAs) for high hazard operations and ensure site meets OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and BDX requirements.
Advise and collaborate with Management, Engineering, Facilities, and the EHS Team to resolve occupational health issues and environmental risks that could result in regulatory violations.
Develop budget information and assist in the preparing of annual site Environmental and Industrial Hygiene budgetary information.
Provide training for associates to ensure compliance with industrial hygiene and environmental regulations, permits and policy requirements. Ensure associates understand occupational health hazards and their role and responsibility in keeping health hazards safe and under control, protecting the environment, and maintaining regulatory compliance. The EHS team facilitates New Hire Orientation as needed.
Collaborate with Environmental Regulatory Agencies, Corporate environmental health and safety leadership & lead inspections and audits.
Perform PPE assessments to identify, verify, or evaluate the effectiveness and functionality of required PPE that is required due to environmental factors or industrial hygiene requirements.
Works in coordination with BD Excellence and Continuous Improvement 2030 BD Sustainability efforts.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field required (Environmental science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, Safety Management or Industrial Hygiene or a related field)
Minimum of 5 years EHS experience including managing waste operations (shipping out hazards and non hazardous waste)
Experience with EPA, air permits, water permits, state agencies, city agencies, etc
2 years or more experience working in a highly automated & large (+500 person) manufacturing environment preferred.
Certifications Preferred: ASP, CSP, CIH, CAIH

Work Environment:

False eyelashes, press-on fingernails, and Jewelry is not allowed on the production floor including dermals. Any associate wearing dermals will be required to cover them while working on the production floor.
Shoes are required to be Steel Toe and non-slip for all associates while on the production floor for safety purposes.
