Director of Jazz Studies

The Department of Music at Stanford University seeks to appoint a Director of Jazz Studies at the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching) for an initial term of five years, with the possibility of renewal for a continuing-term appointment. The department supports a vibrant jazz community by offering courses in jazz history, theory, and instrumental instruction. We have performing ensembles such as the Stanford Jazz Orchestra, Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, and several student jazz combos. Improvisation across musical genres and advanced technical research related to performance and music creation further enrich Stanford's musical culture. In addition, the university hosts the annual independently run Stanford Jazz Workshop, which has been aligned with the department’s teaching and research mission for many years.

To fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this position, the Director of Jazz Studies will:

● teach in areas of expertise, which may include composition, arranging, technology, history, musicianship, and the organizing and coaching of ensembles and combos;

● plan and coordinate a Jazz Studies curriculum in the Department of Music, including the development of a subplan for the Music Major;

● administer the Jazz Studies Program;

● participate in student performance reviews;

● maintain an active departmental presence and collaborate with a broad range of colleagues;

● participate in departmental and university governance;

● take full advantage of Stanford’s innovative academic environment.

We are searching for an artist-practitioner who is a top-tier performer with extensive teaching experience and a strong interest in program-building in an academic environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate instruction, as well as an ability for inclusive teaching and mentorship within a diverse student body.

The expected salary range for this position in the academic year 2025-26 is: $121,000 - $150,000.
