Summary

Under limited supervision, the mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repairs needs by inspecting, servicing, and repairing all necessary equipment to ensure it is in a safe working condition.

This is an outside Technician role designed to provide minor repairs and inspections on our trailers in the yard. Inspect and make necessary repairs to maintain DOT compliance.

Education and Experience

  • Must have trailer and heavy equipment repair skills usually gained through 3+ years of training and/or experience in a related field.

  • Must have the ability to operate vehicles and heavy equipment; valid driver’s license required.

  • Must have forklift certification or become certified within 90 days of employment.

  • Must be able to operate all related shop equipment.

  • Able to learn and retain working knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for trailers and accessorial equipment.

  • Must be able to read installation manuals to assist with troubleshooting and installing non-routine parts.

  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills and/or understanding of electrical theory.

  • Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.

  • Must know proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

  • Must possess personal hand tools and knowledge necessary to perform light maintenance functions.

  • Must be self-motivated, able to multi-task and work independently.

  • Must be a team player, amenable to a variety of work projects.

  • Must be analytical with the ability to apply data.

  • Must be proficient in responding to internal and external customer situations, responding to customer needs as required.

  • Must be able to both think creatively and provide creative contributions to projects.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).

  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.

  • Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance service on all assets by inspecting, servicing, and repairing equipment, following company preventative maintenance schedule to ensure it is in safe working condition.

  • Conduct required safety inspections as required by DOT to ensure it is in safe, working condition.

  • Inspect all tires, wheels, brakes, for safety concerns and documents recommended repairs.

  • Inspect, identify, and document any necessary repairs or replacements to all electrical components.

  • Inspect body, frame, suspensions, air tanks, and mounting braces/hangers for safety concerns and documents recommended repairs.

  • Perform repairs as directed by supervisor.

  • Monitor and maintain shop inventory to ensure that appropriate levels of supplies, materials, and parts are available.

  • Perform shop clean up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

  • Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is always used.

  • Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.

  • Constantly operating various forklifts and other material movement equipment including semi tractors.

  • Intermittently ascend/descend forklifts, tractors, and ladders to perform duties.

  • Occasionally positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to secure loads or fix things.

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. frequently

Summary

The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing and replacing any and all components (brake systems, air systems, electrical components, hydraulic and steering systems) on the various types of ATS owned trailers (Multi axle, Heavy Haul, Schnabel's and trailers that haul windmill blades). Work is completed using ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to ensure equipment is safe to be on the road.

Education and Experience

  • Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or a minimum five years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and experience in cutting and welding.

  • Strong working skill in welding and fabrication of steel and aluminum.

  • Minimum 2 years' experience working on Heavy haul/Schnabel's/blade trailers.

  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.

  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).

  • Working knowledge of trailer maintenance and diagnostic software.

  • A valid driver's license, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required.

  • Must be able to operate all related shop equipment.

  • Must be DOT certified and forklift certified.

  • Strong communications skills (written, verbal, listening),

  • A firm understanding of basic computer operations.

  • Ability to read installation manuals and understand manufacturer training.

  • Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned trailers using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.

  • Move tractors and trailers in and out of the shop for maintenance.

  • Performs repairs following ATS procedures within standard job times to ensure the equipment is available when needed and to get the drivers back on the road as soon as possible.

  • Inspects, troubleshoots and performs all minor and major trailer maintenance including, tire replacement, pressure checks, brakes, lights, hydraulics, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.

  • Fabricates and welds parts that need repair or replacing.

  • Performs shop clean-up and housekeeping responsibilities as well as other miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

  • Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed.

  • Must meet productivity standards.

  • Participate in online OEM training such as After Market Resource (ARC) from Freightliner and hands on training provided by OEM and Factory.

  • Open repair orders and charge out all parts used on trucks and trailers.

  • Remain technically proficient in all areas of the shop including trailer, tire, and basic parts.

  • Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems, determine most effective and efficient method for repair.

  • Document work order details within the Company's CMMS program.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.

  • Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the position.

  • Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
