Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Bachelors Research Associate - Coastal Communities Energy Planning in Sequim, Washington
Overview
The position will primarily support community driven design for coastal communities. Responsibilities assisting in technical assistance programs, such as the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) (https://www.energy.gov/eere/energy-transitions-initiative-partnership-project) and Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) (https://www.energy.gov/eere/clean-energy-communities-program) Some familiarity with marine energy (e.g., wave, tidal, ocean current), offshore wind energy, or ocean sciences is encouraged. The position may also require familiarity with shoreside infrastructure, such as microgrids and transmission, ports, and supply chain issues.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to advance their skills in developing approaches and tools to understand and respond to the needs of coastal, remote, island, and islanded communities engaging in local energy technology innovation.
This position will be onsite/hybrid out of the Seattle or Sequim office.
Responsibilities
Review and synthesize literature, case studies, and tools related to these topics.
Collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team at PNNL and other national laboratories to advance modeling approaches and tools for community-driven energy transitions.
Contribute to scientific, peer-reviewed publications.
Manage independent work assigned by team members.
Networking with other professionals in the organization.
Contributions to publications and proposals.
Communicate information related to these topics to both scientific and public audiences in the form of reports, images, graphics, or presentations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
Recent or forthcoming bachelors degree in engineering, environmental policy, marine science or related field.
Familiarity with marine energy, offshore wind energy, renewable energy, or ocean sciences.
Demonstrated interest and ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience working with collaborators with diverse backgrounds and interdisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with community engagement.
Familiarity with design methodology.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work independently as well as with a team of interdisciplinary researchers.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
