Overview

Inventing new computational techniques, the Principal Computational Scientist is expected to produce novel analytical pipelines that reveal insights into a patient's health. They will work with minimal supervision to conduct their day-to-day work.

Responsibility

• Builds groundbreaking bioinformatic techniques, characterizes data from novel and existing molecular assays, and guides molecular protocol and bioinformatic analysis development from a computational perspective. Uses rigorous data science and modern software best practices to create efficient, reliable, scalable, and optimized bioinformatics pipelines.

• Defines new product opportunities and expands the Myriad portfolio. Partners with the management team in developing goals and objectives for the department and company as a whole.

• Authors posters and publications demonstrating the scientific strengths of our products and the algorithms that power those products.

• Works with legal staff to secure intellectual property rights for inventions pertaining to our current and future products.

• Leads major cross-functional initiatives and communicates the team's results to stakeholders across the company (technology, clinical staff, marketing, sales, legal, genetic counseling, publications, etc.) to drive the products forward in the best interests of the company.

• Exhibits leadership qualities, including but not limited to, growth mindset, integrity, and trust. Brings teams together across multiple functions. Creates an environment of inclusion and requires the same of others.

• Works closely with and mentors scientists and research associates.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computational Biology, Statistics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Computer Science, Systems Biology, Biophysics, Physics, or a related discipline.

• 86+ years of experience developing methods to analyze large, noisy, real-world data sets.

• Experience working with Illumina Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.

• Experience leading projects that span multiple departments, guiding the team to make critical decisions.

• Experience mentoring scientists and research associates.

• Experience developing custom analysis methods and algorithms, and analysis pipelines.

• Strong computational skills, with fluency in Python and a workflow definition language (WDL/Snakemake).

• Strong knowledge of software engineering best practices (experience with writing unit-tests, performing code review, version control software) preferred.

• Multiple peer-reviewed publications, preferred.

• Experience working with CLIA-validated assays and authoring CLIA validation plans, preferred.

• Experience with modern medical genetics data sets (e.g., 1000 genomes, TCGA, GIAB), preferred.

• Working knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry and genetics, preferred.
