Position Summary:
The Principal Product Engineer will lead new product initiatives, current product enhancements, and customer technical communications, in collaboration with adjacent UmbraGroup departments.
This position is located in our Saginaw, Michigan facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the development, analysis, testing and implementation of breakthrough ball screw and actuation technologies
Lead technical communication with customers and internal stakeholders
Generate detailed CAD models and product drawings considering DFM/DFA
Perform engineering analysis to ensure designs will meet customer requirements
Design, conduct, and analyze laboratory testing of new products
Work with design and process teams to identify, investigate and implement state of the art materials, design improvements and manufacturing processes
Support the continuous improvement of products by incorporating feedback from testing, field performance, and operations
Collaborate with our Foligno Italy facility to share and implement best practices
Advance UmbraGroup’s use of analytical tools and testing methods
Prepare and deliver technical proposals, seminars and papers to industry as a “technical expert” in the field of ball screws and motion systems
Mentor and train colleagues
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering; M.S. is a plus
Minimum 8 years of engineering experience
Minimum 5 years of ball screw engineering experience
Experience with solid modeling and drawing creation (NX Preferred), including GD&T
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Energetic and self-motivated
Team player willing to mentor and train less experienced colleagues
Ability to travel up to 15%
Due to ITAR regulations, must be a U.S. Person
Preferred:
Aerospace and/or Defense Experience
Familiarity with ISO 9001 and AS9100 standards in a design and manufacturing environment
Hardware test experience
Familiarity with analytical modeling tools
10 or more years of ball screw engineering experience
DFM/DFA experience
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None
Language, Math, and Reasoning Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings, set-up sheets, travelers, procedure manuals and government regulations.
Computer Skills:
Must be able to use the computer and computer software as required by job.

Work Environment:
The physical surroundings for this position are inside a factory and product manufacturing environment with work split between the offices and shop areas at all the UMBRAGROUP facilities and at customer and/or vendor locations worldwide. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise levels are moderate to loud.
