Burning Man DPW Fence Install Assistant Manager in Reno, Nevada
JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) Fence Installation Assistant Manager will work with the DPW Fence Installation Manager to coordinate and facilitate the installation, removal, and maintenance of all fencing for Black Rock City including the perimeter fence, Gate Road banner flagging, entrance road and city grid perimeter banner flagging, and all other approved civic infrastructure fencing as approved for eligible departments. They will assist in planning, digital documentation updating and creation, inventory and ordering of tools and materials, and supervision of the team at large. They will be interfacing with users, responding to needs for civic fencing across departments, monitoring radio to coordinate requests and dispatch tasks, and perform daily tasks and logistics associated with the operations of their team.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operations (60%)
Assist in the coordination of the tasks and daily schedule of the Fence Team by keeping track of the daily duties required of the team and fielding incoming requests from approved civic functions by staying in radio communication and dispatching fencing needs as they arrive.
Facilitate the survey, installation, maintenance, and removal of the perimeter fence, Gate Road banner flagging, entrance roads, and city grid perimeter banner flagging of Black Rock City.
Provide support to ensure that work is completed in accordance with the design provided by the Burning Man City Planning Committee and the schedule of operations as defined by DPW Management.
Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing any civic fencing and banner flagging throughout Black Rock City.
Routinely clear the trash and windblown debris that the fencing is designed to catch.
Anticipate and track inventory of materials and supplies usage; assist with placing orders for pre-season requests and replenishment.
Proactively maintain and discuss any potential budget adjustments, concerns, and awareness as it relates to any orders or materials and supplies.
Problem-solve emerging traffic flow situations by re-directing and managing roadside fencing and banner flagging.
Personnel Support (20%)
Train and manage staff, maximizing efficiency while maintaining a safe work environment in a harsh environment.
Coordinate and maintain effective and clear communication with all staff and the Fence Installation Mgr. Implement and delegate tasks relating to all aspects of production operations.
Serve as a mentor, positive role model, and team leader directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job, instructing and sharing skills as necessary, and setting realistic work expectations.
Be aware of the atmosphere within the crew. Communicate any concerns regarding social climate and /or protocol to the Fence Manager and /or City Superintendent.
Learn, use, and share the proper pathways of communication for escalating personnel issues and create proper supporting documentation regarding such matters.
Attend and support crew attendance to Team Meetings and daily DPW Morning Meetings.
Help ensure that time cards are filled out and paychecks are distributed to crew in a timely manner.
Documentation (15%)
Learn, effectively use, and update existing online systems and documents as needed (e.g. inventory spreadsheets, time tracking logs etc).
Maintain inventory and accurately track the use and need of tools and supplies, reusing and repurposing inventory whenever possible; assist the Fence Installation Manager with communication to create purchase orders and material requests and to place orders as needed.
Create daily production schedules and an efficient team workflow that will ensure the civic approved fencing and banner flagging is ready for install by deadlines outlined in the production timeline.
As needed, submit receipts and any expense reports; ensure forms are complete and submitted on time.
Prepare written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season and suggestions for improvement; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
Participate in (Manager) Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
Perform other duties as required.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.), Microsoft Word, and Excel. A willingness to learn, use, and routinely update online tools and documents. Comfortable with proactively asking questions should clarification be needed.
Advanced understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and large-scale project management.
Clear, service-oriented, and effective communication at all levels (able to adapt style when necessary) , verbally and written.
Experienced and comfortable with using 2-way radios and following radio protocol.
Ability to lead by example, motivate enthusiasm, and have excellent interpersonal skills; Experience managing volunteers, and the ability and willingness to work with a primarily volunteer labor force (minimum 1 major project).
Experienced supporting a diverse team with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations.
Able to follow directions, receive and integrate feedback into action, maintain a professional demeanor, and respectfully interface with collaborators.
Effective at switching tasks, good time management skills, can evaluate and reprioritize workload as necessary for both self and the team as a whole.
Situationally aware and safety-minded, able to work long hours in extreme conditions.
Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.
Preferred
Familiarity with Burning Man, BRC and its departments and experienced in event-based production work.
Experience supervising major projects in remote wilderness and / or desert environments.
First-Aid knowledge.
It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
From July - September is $17.00 to $20.00 per hour .
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
