Responsibilities

Job Summary:

  • Serves as a legal advisor and business partner on matters related to employee benefits and employment law.

  • Provides legal advice, support, and counsel to the organization's legal and human resources functions in support of strategic and operational priorities within an employment and benefits law practice area.

  • Requires working in a mission focused, dynamic, and collaborative team environment with other healthcare employment and benefits attorneys and direct engagement with business and human resources teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and advise on the design and administration of employee health and welfare, retirement, and executive compensation plans in compliance with all laws (ERISA, DOL, IRC, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, etc.).

  • Draft, review, and revise employee health and welfare benefit, retirement, and executive compensation plan documents, amendments, summary plan descriptions, disclosures, and other related communications.

  • Represent the organization and manage external legal representation in dispute resolution, litigation matters, and regulatory audits related to employee benefits.

  • Manage complex contract drafting and negotiations with plan vendors.

  • Advise on employee benefit matters in connection with complex corporate transactions and post-transaction integration activities.

  • Support employee benefit plan governance and fiduciary matters, such as in benefit claims and appeals.

  • Keep current with legal developments affecting the employee benefits practice area and incorporate such information into advice, counsel, and support for the organization.

Requirements

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • Attorney obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required. Licensure required relevant to state in which work is performed.

Education:

  • Juris Doctorate degree required.

Work Experience:

  • 5 years of experience as licensed, practicing attorney required.

Additional Preferences

  • 3-5 years of experience as a licensed, practicing attorney specializing in employee benefits law (ERISA, DOL, IRC, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, etc.) strongly preferred

  • Experience with not-for-profit entities and church plan experience preferred
