Job Summary

The Regional Director, Legal, Asia Pacific will have principal responsibility for legal matters pertaining to Zimmer Biomet's South East Asia and related Export Market business operations, primarily to support the Company’s markets in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Vietnam + Export Markets (70%), and to support the APAC region more broadly including to support global Legal, Tax and Privacy teams on different projects (30%).

This position is based in Singapore at Zimmer Biomet's Singapore headquarters. This individual will work with other legal professionals and support personnel to advise the APAC business on a broad range of legal matters, manage litigation and commercial legal matters, supervise the Company Secretariat function in APAC, support global projects initiated by global Tax and Privacy teams, and support global Legal and commercial teams on projects involving APAC, all in order to support the business units to achieve their goals and mitigate risk to the Company.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the operation of legal activities in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Vietnam + Export Markets, including provision of strategic advice to the business on legal and critical business matters, including advice on corporate, commercial, employment, data privacy and protection, property and litigation matters.

  • Role will include reviewing and drafting contracts, managing litigation and disputes, monitoring legislative changes and implementing appropriate action/s in response, issuing policies and procedures, implementing legal training, and coordinating legal activities including instructing and managing external counsel where specialist advice is required.

  • Regularly engage with the local Compliance Manager to ensure all legal activities are conducted in compliance with the company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, local industry codes of practice, national and international anti-corruption legislation and national healthcare regulations.

  • Support the VP Legal and Compliance, Asia Pacific, in overseeing the Company's regional legal activities in Asia Pacific, including strategic business development and integration activities and advice, as well as support for internal investigations, audits, and corporate enquiries, as required.

  • Manage the Company Secretariat function in APAC.

  • Support general legal operations, including drafting and reviewing of policies and procedures, and regularly engaging with the broader APAC Legal and Compliance team at regular meetings as well as in relation to regional legal projects.

  • Provide occasional support to global Tax, Privacy and M&A teams on global and regional projects involving APAC.

  • Manage support personnel, plus travel as required.

Expected Areas of Competence

  • Good understanding of the pertinent laws and regulations in South East Asia markets (medical device or other healthcare legal experience is preferred but not required) and basic understanding of Company Secretarial responsibilities for the region.

  • Ability to draft and communicate clear legal advice and to conduct and manage legal training activities for Zimmer Biomet team members.

  • Ability to multi-task and apply technical and commercial concepts to diverse situations; ability to apply legal principles and requirements to a wide variety of fact patterns; confidence and ability to work independently.

  • Experience in preparing, reviewing, enforcing and managing a wide variety of contracts and other legal instrument types.

  • Organized, detail oriented, with a high degree of professionalism. Exhibits high degree of ethics and integrity.

  • Highly motivated, self-starter willing to meet strict deadlines and time constraints; must possess a positive, can-do attitude and show enthusiasm.

  • Strong leadership presence and ability to manage people and projects effectively with demonstrated ability to operate independently as well as part of a team, and to build relationships across and outside the organization.

  • Works collaboratively with peers and leverages skills and knowledge within the regional and global Legal teams.

  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience at multiple levels within the Company through various formats, i.e., presentations, written proposals, reports, correspondence, leading meetings, face-to-face dialogue, etc.

  • Strong analytical and writing skills and ability to speak fluent English.

Education / Experience Requirements

Must possess a Law Degree and at least 12 years' experience as a practicing lawyer in a law firm and/or inhouse corporate legal position. Must have solid academic credentials.

Travel Expectations

Estimated at 5%-10%.

Travel may be required from time to time on short notice. Most travel will be within the Asia Pacific countries, but travel to the United States to attend global department meetings may be expected once or twice per year.
