Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

Are you excited about developing the guidance, navigation, and control software for an advanced fleet of communications satellites? Our team is creating the algorithms and software that will perform high-performance flight control on each spacecraft; in other words, the autopilot that flies the constellation.

As a flight dynamics software development manager, you will manage the development of software services that enable the automation of constellation spaceflight. You will manage and mentor an exceptional, diverse team of applied scientists and software engineers. You will work with our team members and partners in executing cross-disciplinary product development with a high bar for rigor and technical excellence. You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done.

You will anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints. The ability to take large, complex projects and break them down into manageable pieces, develop functional specifications, then deliver them in a successful and timely manner is expected. Maturity, judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role.

The right candidate will possess a strong software management background and a well-rounded technical background in software, and some hardware familiarity. Prior experience with spacecraft or autonomous vehicles is helpful, but not a pre-requisite.

• Enable strategic technical goals of technical team of Research and Applied Scientists

About the team

A successful candidate will manage a two pizza team of Applied Scientists with advanced expertise in astrodynamics and Software Development Engineers with experience in producing GNC infrastructure, tools, and services.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience

• 5+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

• 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

• Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
