The Global Government Affairs group within the General Counsel’s Organization seeks a Director, U.S. Regulatory

Relations (USRR). As the principal intermediary between the company and the supervisory personnel of its federal banking regulators, the USRR team plays a critical strategic role driving a cohesive approach to supervision, including by identifying focus areas of the regulators across engagements and preparing senior executives and the boards of both American Express (AXP) and American Express National Bank (AENB) for their interactions with agency personnel. The USRR team currently supports over 400 regulatory interactions per year, as well as a steady stream of reporting to the agencies, senior management and the AXP and AENB boards.

How will you make an impact in this role?

This Director will be responsible for continuous monitoring activities across risk pillars to support an increasing volume of

regulatory engagements. The successful candidate will lead a team and report to a VP, U.S. Regulatory Relations. The

new Director will work closely with, and directly support, leaders across business units and functions that the regulators

view as critical to the stability, safety, and soundness of the company and AENB.

Key Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain strong working relationships with the dedicated supervisory staff of multiple federal regulatory agencies (i.e., Federal Reserve Bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau) through continuous collaboration and a sense of service to this critical set of external stakeholders.

  • Prepare leaders for their interactions with regulators and generally advise management how best to approach interactions with agency personnel.

  • Connect dots across regulatory interactions and drive internal awareness of focus areas and potential sensitivities in order to minimize regulatory risk and ensure the company is exceeding expectations set forth by law, regulation, and agency guidance.

  • Communicate complex issues clearly and simply (through both written and verbal channels) to company leadership, agency personnel, and a range of internal stakeholders.

  • Promote effective collaboration with teams outside USRR handling responses to regulator inquiries and regulatory examinations.

  • Flourish in a fast-paced environment in which the company is held accountable for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of information provided to its regulators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent ability to communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly, in both written and oral format, and to calibrate communications effectively for senior leaders and regulators.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, executive presence, and ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization and with agency personnel.

  • Broad understanding of the Amex business model, its products, and the role of and relationship between business units and departments across the company – including first, second and third line of defense responsibilities and interactions.

  • Thorough understanding of the remit and lifecycle of regulatory supervision, including the processes and standards employed by the relevant regulatory agencies.

  • Experience interacting with supervisory teams of federal banking regulators, responding to their inquiries, or remediating their findings.

  • Experience developing presentations for regulators, senior management, business unit town halls, and/or the AENB/AXP boards.

  • Experience preparing business representatives to present to an important external audience.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities against tight deadlines.

  • Strong leadership potential, including ability to lead teams and to drive coordination and results in a cross-functional organizational environment.

  • Self-motivated with a high level of personal energy and commitment.

  • Law degree and legal experience is preferable but not required.
