Description of Work
This is an anticipated vacancy.
This position serves as the Concrete Products Engineer/Supervisor in the Materials and Tests Unit’s Manufactured Products Group. The Concrete Products Section within the Manufactured Products Group provides oversight, technical expertise, and field support to all 14 Divisions related to the manufacturing and placement of various precast concrete units, concrete pipe, and prestressed concrete structural members. Their roles and responsibilities are critical to aid in the construction and maintenance of the Department’s transportation infrastructure. The Concrete Products Section is comprised of this Engineer 2 as the supervisor with 3 Engineering Specialist and 3 Engineering Technicians.
Some of the responsibilities of this position include; ensuring that all the NCDOT approved precast and prestressed concrete product facilities are operating as per Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) standards, National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA), American Concrete Pipe Association (ACPA), and NCDOT standards and specifications, evaluating precast product designs for approval that cannot comply with the current NCDOT Standard Drawings due to various reasons, and working in conjunction with the NCDOT Structures Management Unit to review Non-Conformance Reports, repair procedures, evaluation of damaged Precast/Prestressed Members for serviceability, longevity and acceptance. This position will be required to frequently travel to NCDOT projects and at concrete precast and prestressed production facilities throughout North Carolina and in neighboring states. This position may require after-hours and weekend emergency response to concrete bridge strikes and damage.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience inspecting the material properties of concrete and steel materials used in prestressed, precast, and concrete pipe products.
Experience working in close quarters with restricted movement, climbing bridge substructures, and/or working over water or over and around high volumes of traffic.
Thorough knowledge of AASHTO, ASTM, and NCDOT Specifications and Standard Drawings so as to ensure compliance with established testing and inspection methods at producer facilities as well as on location at NCDOT projects.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with various internal and external customers related to inspection, sampling, testing, and certifications.
Experience supervising and coordinating work schedules, logistics, and travel demands within North Carolina and the surrounding states.
Management Preference:
Knowledge, experience and certification in sampling and testing asphalt, aggregate, concrete and soils materials used in highway construction. Knowledge and experience with HiCAMS database. Ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at highway construction projects and material/product stockpiles while following established in-house safety procedures.

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
