JOB SUMMARY of ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Adheres to hospital policies and procedures and philosophy of care. Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital’s standards of excellence. Organizes and administers individualized, professional patient care to patients within ACU. Provides patient care as directed by medical staff and in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital, and the Washington State RCW 18.360. Participates in unit and hospital performance improvement activities. Demonstrates knowledge and skills required to respond to rapidly changing patient needs. Demonstrates knowledge and skills required to function on unit. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age-specific needs and provide age-specific treatment and care.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED

  • Requires active Washington State Medical Assistant – Certified (MA-C) license

  • Current Basic Life Support for healthcare providers (BLS)

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize multiple tasks

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work well with a multidisciplinary team

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

    Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease and risk of physical injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment. Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to exposure to hazardous material.

    WORK CONTACT GROUP:

    All hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff.

    SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Prolonged sitting, walking and standing.

    Clinical Nurse Manager of Perioperative Services.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / TECHNICAL

    The Medical Assistant (MA-C) is responsible to provide general direct and indirect patient care duties in the perioperative setting as delegated by, and under the supervision of, a health care practitioner, including but not limited to:

  • Prepares patients for examination/procedure as appropriate by performing preliminary physical tests (vital signs, weight, height and obtaining relevant patient history).

  • Document complete and accurate patient observations, care and outcomes of interventions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

  • Prepares exam and/or treatment rooms; select, set up and maintain medical supplies and equipment for all examinations and procedures as applicable.

  • Performs EKG tests and transmits through appropriate system to EMR.

  • Participates in patient education by providing standardized, structured written/verbal information to patients regarding procedures and tests as instructed by RN.

  • Maintains competency and performs standardized phlebotomy procedures and basic specimen processing; prepares specimens for the laboratory.

  • Assists with minor surgical procedures as directed, maintaining aseptic and sterile technique as required.

  • Assist with quality measures, including maintenance and recording of required daily equipment checks, and calibration of equipment as necessary.

  • Assists with scheduling and registration of patients for tests and appointments.

  • Collaborates with a variety of personnel and departments to ensure smooth patient flow.

  • Complete all required competencies and maintain skill level.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
