Job Description

Danfoss in Minneapolis, MN is searching for a Mechanical Engineering Intern. The internship offers full-time work in the Summer, with potential part-time opportunities in Spring & Fall 2025. This position will include hands-on benchmarking of competitive products, design of test and assembly equipment, building of prototypes, setting up and reporting of lab tests, and other aspects of new product development. The intern will have the opportunity to use equipment and gain experience with engineering team dedicated 3D printer, CNC, welding, fabrication, and other machine shop equipment in the development primarily of plastic and metal components and assemblies.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Performs mechanical design using engineering principles and advanced math concepts.

  • Creates 3D layouts with a complete understanding of the impact of part sizes and interactions, tolerances, static and dynamic system force/travel and displacement.

  • Troubleshoots returned devices as well as products that fail qualification tests.

  • Demonstrates excellent problem solving skills.

  • Understands and employs a broad knowledge of interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Utilizes basic project management skills.

  • Applies advanced engineering skills regarding mechanical design, analysis and problem solving.

  • Understands and interprets international environmental and engineering standards.

  • Reviews test plans and documents test results using basic word processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to maintain a safe, clean and orderly work area.

  • Follows safety regulations and actively contributes to work safety.

  • Continues education to remain aware of new technology in the changing engineering field.

  • Responds with commitment and sensitivity to satisfying the needs of internal and external customers.

The ideal candidate possesses these skills.

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, sophomores and above preferred.

  • Candidates must be located within 50 miles of the work location.

  • Basic knowledge of the following equipment: Machining, Welding, plastic molding, soldering, Digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, PC data acquisition hardware, inspection equipment, power supplies, and current probes.

  • Advanced knowledge of a 3D CAD system (NX) is a plus.

  • Ability to work with advanced mathematical concepts such as algebra, calculus, FEA, probability and statistics, geometry and trigonometry.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.

  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write test reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively and present information to customers or employees.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in approach and ideas

  • Responds positively and supports changes in procedures, process, technology, responsibility and assignments.

  • Demonstrates advanced interpersonal skills.
