We are particularly interested in professionals whose experience could lead to building curricula in sports and multimedia journalism. Responsibilities will include teaching six courses a year (three in fall semester, three in spring semester) and continued contribution to the field of journalism, including professional development by broadening knowledge and expertise. The Hubbard School and College of Liberal Arts considers teaching lecturers for three-year, renewable contracts after five consecutive years of service. The School also considers senior lecturers for multiple year renewable contracts based on prior service. The successful applicant will teach lower and upper-level journalism majors how to report, write, produce, edit and innovate in a fast-changing media environment. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise as a journalism professional, journalism professional training and/or teaching experience, and the ability to inspire a diverse student body. The School seeks someone who can teach basic to advanced courses in two or more of the following areas: introductory, intermediate and in-depth news reporting and writing; media ethics; news editing; podcasting and sports reporting. The candidate is expected to work closely with students to ensure they are trained in the necessary skills in sports issues and reporting, news editing, and short and long-form storytelling. The preferred candidate should also have the ability to build and strengthen partnerships between faculty and students and the Twin Cities professional community, including those in the sports reporting and media promotion field. A candidate hired with advanced professional and instructional expertise may be asked to participate in curriculum development in the area of sports reporting, journalism and social media, and sports journalism analytics. The school has the expectation that its journalism faculty will prepare students with the skills they need for entering the profession and that includes a contemporary understanding of how AI is used in various ways in multimedia reporting. We support professional development for faculty to continue developing their expertise in this area. We expect all hires to be actively engaged in regional, national or international professional communities and participate in mentoring students for professional careers. This is a 100%-time, annually renewable position over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). This position begins August 25, 2025 and extends through May 24, 2026. This is an academic professional position at the rank of lecturer or senior lecturer, consistent with University policy and depending on qualifications, including years of teaching and professional experience. Additional summer employment may be available. Lecturers in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication provide classroom teaching that supplement faculty offerings and expertise. Lecturers develop and teach courses; advise students with regard to academic concerns and school-related organizations; provide service-related teaching duties; participate in the decisions relating to the policies, courses and programs in which there is involvement; contribute appropriate service to the school, college, and University; continue personal growth within the profession; and keep current with the field and broaden knowledge and expertise. Qualifications Minimum required qualifications: A professional M.A. in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication or related field 4 or more years of related professional experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching at the university level or training groups of professionals 5 years of major-market regional or national experience in news reporting, editing or similar professional journalism experience, with preference for expertise in sports reporting 2+ years experience of professional journalism training, teaching or curriculum development experience since the terminal degree Interest and/or ability to teach journalism skills that integrate multimedia elements such as text, video, audio, photo, graphics and/or data Experience working in an evolving digital environment and developing knowledge of AI impacts and relevance to the journalism profession Involvement and/or leadership in local, state, or national/international associations, such as the Society of Professional Journalists, Minnesota Newspaper Association, Investigative Reporters & Editors, or as a student chapter adviser Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in both professional practices and as contributors to an inclusive working and learning environment About the Department About the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication is the second-largest undergraduate major-serving unit in the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts and is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Journalism and Mass Communication.
