MITRE Security Services division is committed to ensuring a secure and safe environment. Our mission is to protect our people, information, infrastructure, and the integrity of national security information. Through collaboration with our customers, we manage security risks, reduce vulnerabilities, and support MITRE’s overarching mission. As an operator of Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) and a U.S. Government contractor handling classified information, MITRE adheres to the National Industrial Security Program (NISP), the NISP Operating Manual (NISPOM), and Intelligence Community Directives (ICD). The Security Mission Assurance (SMA) Group strengthens MITRE’s security posture through compliance readiness activities, knowledge management tools and processes, and a culture of security awareness. By integrating robust security processes, continuous improvement initiatives, and international security requirements, SMA ensures operational resilience and supports MITRE in addressing our nation’s most pressing challenges. This role is crucial to maintaining a highly effective security program that safeguards MITRE’s 9,500+ employees across 56 domestic and international locations, including 23 cleared facilities.
Position Overview:
MITRE is seeking a Manager of Security Mission Assurance to lead the SMA team, focusing on security review and assurance activities across all security disciplines to ensure a robust security posture. This role involves managing the team’s workload, ensuring adherence to compliance schedules, and overseeing the corrective action monitoring (CAM) process. The SMA Manager is responsible for maintaining MITRE’s Security Readiness Guidebook and associated knowledge management tools and processes, developing division metrics, and serving as a senior Industrial Security Programs (ISP) advisor to the Director of MITRE Security Services.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Leadership and Operational Excellence:
Provide strategic leadership over SMA activities to foster operational excellence across the security enterprise by establishing clear SMA priorities in consultation with the Director.
Advise the Director and Department Managers on process improvement opportunities.
Serve as the senior Industrial Security Program advisor to the Director for security review and assurance activities, actively participating in internal reviews as the security assurance leader.
Attract, develop, and retain a team of security professionals to effectively shape and execute the SMA mission.
Reinforce organizational rigor and discipline across MITRE’s security organization through consistent operating procedures, effective use of collaboration tools and automation, and continuous improvement initiatives quality-checked through internal security assurance reviews.
Security Mission Assurance:
Develop and manage the security compliance readiness schedule, including self-inspections, internal reviews, and external U.S. Government security reviews.
Oversee Corrective Action Monitoring processes, documentation, and meetings to ensure that deficiencies are addressed systematically and holistically to prevent recurrence.
Maintain the Security Readiness Guidebook and knowledge management tools, processes, templates, and related resources.
Develop measures and metrics to inform MITRE leadership on the effectiveness of MITRE’s security program and to identify process improvement opportunities.
Collaborate with the Director and Department Managers to enhance security review and assurance processes.
Manage SMA programs and staff covering international security, security policies and procedures, Security Awareness, Training, and Education (SATE) activities, knowledge management, and broader change management and process improvement initiatives across MITRE Security Services.
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 6 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
In-depth knowledge of the NISPOM and ICD, with experience assessing compliance.
Multidisciplinary background with deep technical knowledge and experience in industrial security programs or information systems security.
Working knowledge of insider threat programs, personnel security, physical security, classified document control, and related disciplines required of cleared contractors under the NISPOM.
Active Top-Secret clearance with the eligibility for TS/SCI clearance.
Ability to communicate complex issues clearly in a concise and organized manner both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated experience leveraging technical tools and software platforms to improve processes and optimize program effectiveness.
Intellectually curious with excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to dissect issues quickly to characterize emerging concerns, especially in a cross-functional and matrixed environment.
Excellent strategic relationship-building skills.
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in Security Management, Business Administration, or related field.
Experience as a Facility Security Officer (FSO), Contractor Program Security Officer (CPSO), Information System Security Manager (ISSM), Information System Security Officer (ISSO), or related role within an industrial security program.
Lean Six Sigma certification.
Experience working within an FFRDC, UARC, or similar R&D environment.
Management experience leading teams within at least one of the following domains:
Industrial Security
Information Systems Security
Insider Threat Program
Personnel Security
Physical Security
