Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pathology and Clinical Lab phlebotomist has high school diploma or GED and/or graduate of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program who has the technical skills and knowledge for the proper collection of blood specimens from all ages of patients; participates in special chemistry procedures, performs bedside glucose testing; monitors incoming orders of the LIS; performs clerical duties as required, must possess basic knowledge of computer functions and contribute to the learning of new employees and students. In addition, Phlebotomist II employees will perform POC cardiac testing in the ED. Phlebotomist III will have all duties of Phleb I and Phleb II as well as being responsible for education; monitors the completion of initial, annual competencies and gives input on evaluations and discipline. Phleb III will also manage their shift with regards to lunch breaks, staffing and workload distribution. Phlebotomist II or Phleb III will be deemed proficient in administering IM injections (limited to Flu and Tetanus vaccine only) by an appointed ED staff member.

What you will do in this role:

  • Demonstrates superior clinical laboratory skills and critical thinking

  • Performs phlebotomy with minimal trauma to patient and obtains blood 97% of the time on the first attempt.

  • Always completely explains to the patient the procedure to be performed

  • Always verifies correct patient by checking name on requisition with name on patient’s armband before a procedure is begun.

  • Always follows appropriate aseptic technique prior to performing phlebotomy

  • Accurately labels specimen at immediately after procedure is complete with a computer generated label. Always records User ID and time of collection on label.

  • Consistently completes routine blood collections within 5 minutes; difficult cases within 5 – 15 minutes

  • Performs maintenance and QC on bedside glucose meter as required prior to testing patient samples

  • Always records all bedside glucose test results on label and places on chart.

  • Promptly and accurately keys results into LIS within 60 minutes

  • Notifies nursing staff of high or low results and collects venous specimen

  • Performs all special procedures (i.e., blood cultures, capillary sticks and glucose tolerance timed specimens) accurately, professionally and in a timely manner.

  • Consistently obtain an ER turnaround time within benchmark

  • Consistently collects Blood Cultures in an appropriate aseptic technique with no incidents of contamination

  • Responds to STAT BGT in Nursery within 2 minutes, ER within 7

  • minutes, Surgery within 4 minutes and other STATS within 10 minutes of order.

  • Completes initial competency with new employees within 90 days (Phleb III)

  • Completes annual competency with employees one month before the employees anniversary (Phleb III)

  • Manages their shift with regard to lunch breaks, staffing and workload distribution. (Phleb III)

  • Follows through on tests or procedures left from previous shift and reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of procedures.

  • Always produces Outstanding Specimen and test reports; for review and completion of pending collections.

  • Is familiar with front office policies and procedures and is able to process outpatients and drop off specimens.

  • Must process drug screen collections with 100% accuracy

  • Provides age appropriate care to all patient populations for which staff member is responsible and trained for

What qualifications you will need:

  • Phlebotomist II – High school diploma or GED. One-year phlebotomy experience or graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program

  • Phlebotomist II – ASCP, NHA or NCCT certified; an uncertified phlebotomist with one-year experience or a certification eligible phlebotomist (has one year from date of hire to obtain certification)

  • Phlebotomist, or National Association of Phlebotomy Technicians, or Certificate, or High School Graduate / GED must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date
