Description

The AWS Commerce Platform provides the back and front-end services that enable AWS customers to purchase AWS services and understand and manage their infrastructure costs. Our team tackle some of the hardest scalability, performance, and distributed computing challenges the world. We process trillions of events per month using stream processing techniques, process billions of line items via map reduce, and manage artifacts through the latest in database technologies; DynamoDB and Aurora. We process big data and provide tools for customers to interactively understand their bills. We also provide the analytics that let customers manage billions of dollars of IT usage and spending. Because we sit at the nexus of all AWS services and interact directly with end-customers, we also work closely across all AWS teams to ensure that we offer a great customer experience. Our team within Commerce Platform is working on a set of Contract Automation and onboarding initiatives to streamline AWS Customer deal agreements creation and ingestion into our billing systems. We enable AWS Billing, AWS Sales and AWS Legal organization to sign contracts/deals with AWS customers faster, compute bills accurately, apply discounts and enhance customer experience overall.

Key job responsibilities

As a Sr. Software Development Engineer, you will:

  • Own design, development, test, deployment and operation of highly available, secure systems

  • Be responsible for ensuring sanity of architecture, operational excellence and quality, delivering results on time.

  • Work closely with other teams across AWS and Amazon to deliver features that require cross-team leadership.

  • Obsess over simplifying enterprise scale commerce complexity.

  • Mentor other engineers and interns on the team.

  • Regularly dive into architecture, code, test plans, project plans, deployments and operations to drive excellence throughout our organization.

A day in the life

On a typical day you might

  • Design and implement new features and services for customers

  • Work with principal engineers and developers across teams to decide on an architectural approach for a new product or feature

  • Provide support, guidance and coaching to your team to grow their skills, overcome obstacles, and help them tackle new challenges

  • Tackle systematic problems and improve how your team operates, both internally and when interacting with other teams

  • Advise managers and senior leaders of the options to deliver a customer request, and the tradeoffs involved

About the team

We are an UK-based team with peer teams in the UK and in the US. We work closely together to ensure AWS customer bills are generated correctly and on-time.

Utility Computing (UC)

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design

  • Experience in professional, non-internship software development

  • Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

  • Experience in development in the last 3 years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
