Overview
USU Extension in Salt Lake County is overseeing a Youth Court in Kearns. Youth Court is a restorative justice process serving as an alternative to the traditional Juvenile Justice system. Our Youth Court is certified by the Utah Youth Court Association under the Utah Youth Court Diversion Act. Its purpose is to address the early stages of juvenile delinquency by allowing youth referred for minor offenses to be sentenced and mentored by a panel of their peers. Participating youth are required to complete dispositions that provide opportunities to strengthen ties to school, community, and positive peers and repair or restore harm caused by their offense.
Responsibilities
The Youth Court Facilitator will attend weekly hearings to assist Youth Court Coordinators in implementing the hearing process.
Understand the Utah Youth Court Diversion Act, a Utah State Statute governing Utah State Youth Courts
Attend weekly Youth Court Hearings in Kearns (Wednesdays, 5:45 pm to 8:15 pm)
Attend monthly Youth Court Task group (first Thursday of each month from 10 am -11 am), and Coordinator meetings (first Monday of each month from 4 pm - 5 pm)
Schedule referred youth for their court dates and schedule Youth Court Panelists for hearings
Oversee the preparation and the execution of Youth Court Hearings
Gather and input Youth Court data and provide quarterly data summaries to referring agencies and task group stakeholders
Help with tracking and reconciling participant fees
Research and secure disposition partners
Complete all required trainings
Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all Youth Court material and adhere to all privacy and data sharing requirements
Other duties as needed
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Have no convictions of serious crimes and comply with background check requirements
High school graduate
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work with a community team of diverse stakeholders and organizations
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to confidentiality, honesty, and ethics
The ability to be fair and impartial - treating all equally, fair, and just
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with youth
Ability to speak Spanish
