Overview
The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Utah State University invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor position in Portuguese beginning August 1st, 2025. The course is part of the Utah Bridge Program and is designed as an advanced language pathway for high school students who have passed the AP Language and Culture exam. This individual reports to the WLC department head. Review of applications start on February 24th.
Responsibilities
A successful candidate must be qualified to teach literature and culture courses equivalent to college-level, upper-division (3000-level and above) courses, demonstrate pedagogical excellence, deliver instruction face-to-face to high school students, and collaboratively partner with the high school instructor for lesson delivery and assessment. Sections of this course will be offered at area high schools.
The instructor's schedule and academic calendar will be tied to the high schools' schedules. Teaching schedules will be coordinated between the high school locations, and the instructor must drive between locations on instructional days. A valid driver's license is required. Native or near-native fluency with an Oral Proficiency Interview test rating of Advanced-High or higher in Portuguese is a prerequisite.
Co-teach and lead out on instruction 1 day each week on the high school schedule and academic calendar. All other instructional days are taught by the high school instructor.
Meet before or after the class period to collaborate/plan with the high school instructor for next lessons and discuss student progress on learning outcomes.
Attend state Summer Bridge Program Institute on July 30, 31 and August 1: new instructor orientation, support on the co-teaching partnership, and professional workshops to prepare to teach the Portuguese 3116 course, Navigating Identities of the Portuguese Speaking World.
A complete syllabus and weekly instructional guide, including text and resources, is provided to all instructors. Instructors follow the course scope-and-sequence and develop lesson plans working toward unit and course assessments.
Qualifications
A minimum of a Masters in Portuguese or a related field
Native or Near-Native Portuguese language proficiency, OPI score of advanced high
