Argonne National Laboratory Kubernetes/Cloud Platform Administrator in Lemont, Illinois
The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is home to one of the world's pioneering exascale supercomputers, Aurora. ALCF is dedicated to supporting high-performance computing (HPC) and adjacent services that are crucial to the research workflow.
The Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is seeking a skilled Kubernetes/Cloud Platform Administrator to join their team.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
Managing and optimizing on-premise Kubernetes clusters that support services interacting with traditional HPC workloads and infrastructure.
Collaborating with scientists and operations teams to design and implement solutions that address facility needs, including security, storage, scheduling, and authentication.
Administering and maintaining one or more on-premise Kubernetes clusters in a production environment.
Designing and implementing cluster services to meet facility requirements, focusing on security and integration with existing infrastructure.
Collaborating with scientists and operations teams to achieve organizational goals.
Working onsite in the Lemont campus up to 5 days per week, with some flexibility for remote work.
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Proficiency in contemporary Linux containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Podman, Apptainer, OCI)
Experience in vanilla Kubernetes cluster administration, including networking, storage, and security
Strong background in Linux system administration and the ability to collaborate with other administrators to ensure system stability
Knowledge of systems programming in one or more common programming languages/frameworks
Understanding of GitOps principles and tooling, as well as CI/CD processes
Familiarity with web services and technologies, including architecture and deployment
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Knowledge of HPC operations, tools, and workflows (e.g., PBS Pro, Lustre)
Proficiency in Golang programming and experience with Kubernetes APIs
Experience in confidential computing technologies and practices
Levels:
This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT2 or PT3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements for the two levels are as follows:
PT2: Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent. The expected hiring range for this position is $67,639 - $106,724
PT3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent. The expected hiring range for this position is $83,264 - $131,342
