Organization Overview:

Lilly is currently constructing an advanced manufacturing facility for production of API molecules located in Lebanon, IN (Lilly Lebanon API). This facility is Lilly’s largest investment in manufacturing capacity and is intended to provide APIs for current and future products, including new modalities. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the startup team for a greenfield manufacturing site, and the successful candidate will help to build the processes and facility to enable a successful startup into GMP manufacturing operations.

Main Purpose and Objectives:

This position is responsible for providing technical oversight of raw materials and consumables utilized during the manufacture of small molecules to ensure a reliable supply of material with safety first and quality always.

The TS/MS Materials Scientist is part of the Lilly Lebanon API TS/MS team that provides technical support to the Lebanon manufacturing with an emphasis on the scientific aspects of materials (raw materials, consumables) used in production. This position will interact with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Procurement, Regulatory departments, other Lilly sites and external suppliers. Knowledge of chemistry and understand the scientific principles required for the manufacturing of intermediates and bulk drug substances is required. Experience in API manufacturing is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and expertise for the qualification and implementation of new raw materials and consumables.

  • Work effectively and efficiently in a cross-functional team with Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Operations Planning, and Procurement to ensure reliable supply of raw materials and consumables.

  • Lead technical evaluations of second sources of key raw materials and consumables to firm up supply chain.

  • Own extractable and leachables risk assessments as needed to support commercial manufacturing.

  • Anticipate and resolve complex problems. Drive solutions that impact the site.

  • Prepare, review, approve, and provide technical support for the preparation of relevant technical documents such as change controls, deviation investigations, plant trial protocols and summary reports, procedures, and technical reports.

  • Provide technical support during the evaluation of supplier change notifications.

  • Own (or provide input to) materials components of Annual Product Reviews, Management System Reviews, etc.

  • Work with manufacturing Process Team counterparts to assess/investigate material issues and implement materials changes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant science or engineering field

  • 1+ years of manufacturing lab experience, preferably in a cGMP environment

Additional Preferences:

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Ability to independently master assigned processes and to coordinate activities with internal and external partners.

  • Experience in organic synthesis.

  • Experience in API manufacturing.

  • An understanding of cGMP and regulatory requirements.
