General Function: Assist professional nursing staff in the ED by performing specific functions related to patient care not requiring a license. Including personal assistance with activities of daily living and the maintenance of the environment. Also included in the responsibilities for the Emergency Department Technician is to perform monitoring of ECG tracing and report life threatening dysrhythmias or changes from the base line to the RN and Physician. Job Duties ? Escort and transport patients ? Perform comfort and safety measures for patients ? Assist with triage and obtain document vital signs ? Assist in blood collection for lab work. ? Perform simple treatments and procedures related to patient care: o Assist with CPR in Code 99 situations o Cleanse and dress wounds o Assist physician with suturing, casting, traction o Insert uncomplicated Foley catheters o Answer all communication systems located in ED o Collect, clean and transport supplies and equipment to and from Central Supply o Assist in immobilizing body parts o Identify and report any dysrhythmias to RN or physician o Cross-train as a stand-in unit secretary o Document ECG strips on patient?s chart initially, prn and prior to discontinuation of monitor and admission of patient o Assist RN in the documentation of IV medications on rhythm strips and appropriate follow up strips o Be on the floor with lab drawn during code for other patients o Clean and stock treatment rooms o Assist with the maintenance and storage of supplies and linens. o Maintain orthopedic equipment and supplies o Empty trash and linen bags as necessary. o Apply cardiac monitor, oxygen saturation monitor, and automated blood pressure machines to patients. o Assist with performance improvement o Answer telephone, make phone calls and post lab reports o Personal care: cleaning of patient when indicated, assist with elimination, linen changes, securing personal items o Application of ice packs o Weighing of patients o Clean environment and work area. o Communicate with physician, patients, staff, ancillary personnel and visitors o Practice good guest relations o Practice high tough relations o Phlebotomy o EKG?s MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: -Ability to read, write and understand verbal and written instructions. -Basic computer skills Preferences -High School Diploma or equivalent -NR-EMT or Junior/Senior Nursing Student -BCLS
