Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to deliver culturally sensitive, competent behavioral health services to clients under the supervision of the Behavioral Health Director. This position will determine the nature of client’s situation, initiate treatment plan, provide individual and group counseling, facilitate all aspects of outpatient treatment, and document progress. Clinician will be responsible for general coordination of counseling services and have sufficient personal mobility to complete field work at various locations. Position will require flexible work schedule to include evening and weekend hours as necessary.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • demonstrate competency in utilizing diagnostic tools for assessment of mental illness and co-occurring disorders.

  • Administer psychological testing, complete diagnostics, and prepare written reports as required.

  • Perform screenings, intake and assessment; interview client, family members, and others as necessary; assess medical, emotional and social information.

  • Provide referrals to appropriate treatment agencies and other related services as necessary.

  • Develop individualized treatment plans with measurable goals and objectives, and provide timely and thorough documentation in compliance with Department, State, Federal policies and regulations.

  • Work effectively with other community and state agencies to provide a collaborative continuum of care for mutual clients.

  • Provide information and outreach intervention services to Tribal members as requested.

  • Provide services including individual, family, and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and rehabilitation services as necessary.

  • Follow professional code of ethics including confidentiality, individual rights, professional and legal issues in providing services.

  • Participate in required clinical staffing and weekly supervision with behavioral health department as well as with other outside agencies as needed.

  • Complete all assignments with considerable independence, under the supervision of the Director, and Clinical Supervisor. Non-licensed psychologists, or psychologist candidates will complete assignments under the direct supervision of a licensed Clinical Psychologist.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Employee with Ph.D. degree must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice Psychology in the State of Alaska, another state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States

  • Psychologist Candidates and Psychologist Externs working toward completion of doctoral degree under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Supervisor accepted. Completion of doctoral degree (Ph.D. or PsyD.) in Clinical / Counseling Psychology preferred.

  • Two to five years clinical field work experience required. Must have a background in communicating and interacting effectively in cross-cultural situations.

  • Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of State and Federal guidelines for clinical programs and “best practice” techniques.

  • Knowledge of social problems experienced by Alaska Natives and American Indians.

  • Knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse services available in the community and some familiar with state wide services.

  • Knowledge of screening and identification of symptoms of alcohol/drug abuse and withdrawal.

  • Knowledge and ability to carry out federal confidentiality rules for clients seeking substance abuse services.

  • Skill in utilizing diagnostic tools for assessment and diagnostic purposes.

  • Ability to provide behavioral health treatment services in clinical and community-based settings.

  • Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.

  • Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).

  • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The noise level in the work environment is usually average.

Large portion of time will be spent in front of computer screen, researching and reviewing various documents for final disposition to internal / external customers. Writing by hand and using a personal computer. Traveling occasionally, to out-of-town meetings and functions.

Working Environment

The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an office environment within a public service facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary. The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family members.

Conditions of Hire

  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
