Job Description Summary
Consulting Services, a part of GE Vernova, has offices in multiple countries and offers our global clients (external & internal GE) a wide range of solutions across the entire spectrum of power generation, delivery, and utilization. Our Power Systems Engineering team utilizes their deep knowledge of connected power grid planning, design, operation, and life-cycle management, to offer customized solutions to our global clients. Our Power Economics team offers analyses focused on the understanding and the study of the financial and physical operation of the electric power systems including generation and grid planning, system optimization, asset valuation, competitive power markets and energy policy implications. Over 700 entities worldwide use our suite of software tools to assess the economics, performance, and reliability of interconnected power systems. The Senior Software Engineer – Transfer Capability Expert will assist in developing Power system transfer capability tools. These new analytic tools will leverage the existing functionality of GE’s Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) software, Multi Area Production Simulation (MAPS) software, Multi Area Reliability Simulation (MARS) software. In this role, you will participate in the development of tools that will calculate the different types of power transfer capability, depending on the criteria and methods used to calculate them. You will coordinate the collection and modelling of data amongst multiple stakeholders and present findings.
Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Partner with key stakeholders to understand functionality needs for the development of transfer capability analysis tool
Develop Python modules to integrate the transfer capability into the existing GE PSLF’s Python API
Work with the team to develop real-world test cases to prove the capabilities of the tools as they are built
Develop input data formats for the new tool leveraging existing GE PSLF’s powerflow and contingency definitions formats where possible, collect data and model it in those formats
Develop, and lead portions of, a real-world proof-of-concept analysis establishing, demonstrating, and teaching best practices for the usage of the power transfer capability tools to other members of the team
Provide software support for the new transfer capability analysis tool to internal and external customers
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
Minimum 10 years’ experience in Software Development, Power Systems Analysis, or the Energy Industry with focus on power systems modeling, power flow analysis, contingency and transfer analysis
Demonstrated knowledge of Algorithm development
Demonstrated experience with C#, Python
Demonstrated knowledge of bulk electric system economics
Desired Characteristics
Experience in developing power transfer capability tools including thorough understanding of calculation of various types like Total transfer capability, Available transfer capability, Transmission reliability margin and Capacity benefit margin
Demonstrated knowledge of power systems modeling, power flow analysis and dynamics, numerical solution methods, continuation power flow and sparsity techniques
Experience in developing/working knowledge of various transmission adequacy and reliability assessment tools available in market in planning software like TARA, PowerWorld, PowerFactory
Demonstrated knowledge of contingency processing techniques and Industry Reliability standards like North American Electric Reliability Corporation's TPL (Transmission Planning), TOP (Transmission Operations) and MOD (Modeling, Data and Analysis) standards
Demonstrated software development skills in modern object-oriented languages (at least one of C#, Java, or Python)
Experience working with large datasets and Hierarchical Data Format (HDF)
Demonstrated application of complex mathematics and engineering to real-world electric power system problems
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Experience with software build process, unit testing, and software QA
Experience with Mercurial, GIT, or other distributed revision control software and developing engineering software tools
Production Cost Modelling experience is a plus
Self-starter with the ability to lead development projects
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
Masters / PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
