Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the Direction of the HCA Healthcare Group Vice President of Graduate Medical Education, the GME Division Vice President (DVP) of Operations will provide the strategy, oversight, and hands-on management for the GME service line and programs in a specific HCA Healthcare Division. To accomplish the GME strategy for the Division, the DVP will need to secure the needed collaboration of others in the highly matrixed HCA Healthcare environment. While working to understand the needs and business strategy of the Division, the DVP will be responsible for being the knowledge broker and implementation leader for GME in the Division as well as being a part of the enterprise-wide HCA Healthcare GME VP team implementing the GME strategy for the entire enterprise. Hands-on involvement with faculty recruitment, problem-solving for resident issues, facilitating smooth operations for GME Continuity Clinics, managing the financial success of GME in the Division, etc. are all key aspects of this role.

What you will do in this role:

Knowledge Broker

Successful candidates for this role will:

  • Possess the executive level skills and knowledge needed to oversee the implementation of GME programs within their Divisions as well as the ongoing management of a multifaceted business unit that will operate in multiple teaching hospitals within a Division

  • Have in-depth knowledge of the workings of Graduate Medical Education and understand the regulatory structure of the ACGME

  • Be able to lead and sustain GME institutional accreditation and program accreditation within a multi-hospital market/Division

  • Understand and manage the execution of the faculty hiring and contracting process for all programs in the Division

  • Understand and oversee the unique financial support and expense management for GME programs

  • Effectively manage a team of residents, faculty, and staff in the Division that may be more than one thousand persons

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the GVP of GME and the Division leadership, design the GME development plan for the Division then manage the execution of that strategy.

  • Work collaboratively with the Division Leadership to understand the Division’s strategy, growth, and business plan to ensure that the GME activity is closely aligned.

  • Be actively engaged, leading and solving problems for all aspects of the GME service line. This position is one that requires engaged and active leadership not distanced oversight.

  • Oversee closely the recruitment and contracting of the necessary faculty for all programs. This will include learning how to successfully navigate the HCA and Physician Services Group contracting process, meeting with prospective candidates and creating innovative solutions at times regarding the appropriate employment option for each faculty member.

  • Provide skilled executive-level oversight for all GME activities in the Division.

  • Serve as needed as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for various hospitals if the Division employs a consortium model for GME.

  • Understand the needs related to the program continuity clinics and provide oversight for their successful operation.

  • Provide subject matter expertise on GME and GME issues to Division and facility leadership and if needed Consortium GME Program leadership.

  • Be familiar with and able to successfully navigate the residency management tool for the Division.

  • Routinely meet with the hospitals to understand challenges and create solutions.

  • In cooperation with the HCA AVP for Accreditation, manage the program’s initial and continuing accreditation process for all programs.

  • Participate in enterprise-wide as well as Division GME meetings.

  • Be the liaison for and the first point of contact for the Hospitals to the GME Corporate office.

  • Communicate clearly and often with Hospital GME leaders especially relaying information from the GME Corporate office.

  • Provide oversight to all programs regarding the recruitment of residents as well as being the final approval for all rank order lists.

  • As needed, take on enterprise-wide assignments to support the GME programs as a whole.

  • Develop needed communication and process plans to successfully implement the GME strategy in your Division.

  • Attend Division leadership meetings to ensure the GME plan and needs are being presented to leaders.

  • Meets leadership obligations under the Ethics and Compliance program.

  • Work to design and build the needed Continuity Clinics and ensure fiscally sound operations.

  • Work with GME, Division and Hospital Leadership to continually evaluate existing programs and opportunities for new program building.

  • Regularly meet with DIOs, Program Directors, Program Coordinators, and Residents to understand the needs and suggestions for all constituent groups.

  • Work with DIOs, Program Directors, and Program Coordinator to evaluate and retain graduates of the residency programs within the market, Division, or HCA enterprise.

  • Report our monthly or as needed in a formalized monthly operating report to the corporate GME leaders on a standardized set of metrics that include resident recruitment, finances, continuity clinics, etc.

  • Be the overall leader and problem solver for the GME service line in the Division.

  • Practicing and adhering to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge and experience running Graduate Medical Education programs.

  • Knowledge of the ACGME accreditation process.

  • Ability to plan, organize, execute, delegate, and supervise.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities at once with minimal supervision.

  • Skill in dealing with interpersonal issues and customer relations.

  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of existing methods and procedures.

  • Skill in hiring and managing teaching faculty.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical and administrative staff and the public.

Education

  • Doctorate which may include an MD, DO, Ph.D., or other advanced degree preferred

  • Master’s degree required

  • 5 or more years of relevant GME experience in roles such as Program Director, DIO, or VP of GME in a multi-program GME institutional setting or executive level leadership in a multi-hospital health system
