THE OPPORTUNITY
The Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF) at Colorado School of Mines is seeking a primary manager for its X-ray Diffraction and X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) tools. The successful candidate will be a part of the team of research staff who support research activities across the entire campus. The candidate will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of these instruments, including maintenance and training. The candidate will work closely with faculty and graduate students and other researchers performing analysis on these instruments.
JOB DUTIES
LAB AND INSTRUMENT MANAGEMENT (60%)
Maintain the instruments in good calibrated and operating condition
Troubleshoot and correct instrument problems and call in service requests as needed
Maintain instrument usage records for billing
TRAINING AND SERVICE (30%)
Provide training and support for internal and external users including data collection and analysis
Supervise user activity to ensure compliance with facility guidelines and safety standards
Analyze samples for internal and external users
CONTINUED EDUCATION & EXPERTISE (10%)
Engage with the local X-ray community, and provide advice on specimen preparation and analysis methods
Work with faculty and other researchers on implementing new methods, including keeping current on the latest developments in X-ray analysis equipmen
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related Science or Engineering field
Minimum of 2 years of experience in X-ray Diffraction including specimen preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis
Minimum of 2 years of experience in X-ray Computed Tomography
Experience with X-ray equipment operation for materials science
Familiarity with the theory and data analysis techniques for XRD and XCT
Experience with changing X-ray optics and detectors and performing X-ray alignments
Experience with XRD of powder, thin film, and bulk samples
Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related Science or Engineering field
Experience working with students and training others
Experience managing instrumentation
Experience troubleshooting and recovering instrument issues, including software and hardware issues
Experience working with and communicating with service engineers
Knowledge of other materials characterization techniques
Record of relevant publications in scientific journals
SALARY AND BENEFITS
$78,600 - $90,500 annual salary rate
