Internal Posting – Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time, temporary part-time, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.
Position will function as a Transportation Worker IV in our Gaston County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage task, snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed and operating heavy equipment. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
Working Knowledge of Standard Road Maintenance and Construction Procedures.
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.
Additional Expectations:
Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment screening.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
