Job Description:

The Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) is recruiting candidates for a scientific laboratory manager whose primary responsibility will be to oversee the day-to-day operations of the EPI’s BSL3 area.

Research at the Emerging Pathogens Institute focuses on the emergence of pathogenic microorganisms in humans, plants, insects and animals. An understanding of, and experience with biosecurity and microbiology systems, along with prior experience in a BSL3 facility will be advantageous for the person in this position. This position will also work closely with subject matter experts within University of Florida’s Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain efficient day-to-day operations of the assigned BSL3 facility including, but not limited to, training new users, compliance monitoring, coordinating research activities of multiple laboratories, and resource scheduling.

  • Source and maintain the inventory of required safety supplies and laboratory equipment to ensure full compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and meet end user research needs.

  • Ensure required safety checks and waste removal is fully compliant with relevant SOPs. Coordinate laboratory and equipment decontamination and maintenance.

  • Help coordinate proper emergency response procedures for the BSL3 facility; may include responding onsite after hours and on weekends.

  • Help coordinate proper maintenance and testing of critical containment equipment, and document annual BSL3 re-verification efforts.

  • Participate in training personnel who conduct Select Agent research to assure compliance with the Select Agent Final Rule, and with all written Select Agent Plans (Incident Response, Safety, and Security). Participate in Select Agent drills and tabletop exercises.

  • Coordinate and plan the annual BSL3 facilities shutdown, overseeing critical decontamination processes for the revalidations and recertifications of equipment and facilities.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or a related science field and four years of professional laboratory experience with at least one year of biosafety related experience.

  • Strong background in biosafety, previous BSL3 compliance monitoring, supply chain and logistics management, and laboratory assay development and validation.

  • Biological safety credentials such as a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) preferred.
