Description of Work Unit

The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences is focused on education, research, and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services. Position Summary

A Bioinformatician position (Research Associate II) is offered in the Morris lab (Crop Adaptation Lab). The bioinformatician will analyze, manage, and disseminate findings from pangenomics, transcriptomic, and metabolomic data sets to support the team’s mission to understand and improve crop adaptive traits. The successful candidate will be responsible for bioinformatic analyses and the development, implementation, and management of shared bioinformatics pipelines for plant genetic research and development. The work will contribute to trait discovery and prebreeding that serves global crop improvement networks.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biology, Computer Science, or a related field and 3+ years of relevant professional experience; or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Genomics, or a related field

  • Demonstrated experience in command line (Linux and/or Unix) and high-performance computing cluster environments

  • Demonstrated expertise in application of bioinformatics software and development of custom scripts.

  • Proficiency in programming languages like R, Python, Java, etc.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by employment start date. The department will not sponsor visa status for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Training or professional experience applying bioinformatics for plant science, crop improvement, or quantitative trait genomics in any system

  • Experience developing scalable bioinformatics pipelines and/or open source software resources.

  • Experience working with extremely large bioinformatics data (e.g. pangenomics, transcriptomics, phenomics).

  • Experience with FAIR data principles and data management best practice, including data quality control and data deposition.

  • Experience with genomic analyses relevant to crop improvement programs such as genetic mapping, marker development, and diversity analyses.

  • Demonstrated experience of effectively working with collaborators and stakeholders with limited bioinformatics expertise.

  • Demonstrated expertise communicating insights from bioinformatic analyses using data visualization and/or oral presentations.

  • Demonstrated experience or interest in applying bioinformatics to international agriculture, or other global challenges.
