The Fire Maintenance Worker (FMW) position maintains and repairs emergency fire and medical equipment and provides assistance to emergency equipment technicians, performs hose testing and repairs (including hose nozzles), purchases parts and protective personnel equipment, assists with inventory management, delivers equipment and supplies to fire stations and provides logistic support at emergency scenes.

Salary Range: Fire Maintenance Worker: $27.85 - $34.77 hourly / $57,928.00 - $72,321.60 annually

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Additional standby for emergency call back-up is required on a rotational basis.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

  • Makes deliveries to Eugene and Springfield fire stations three days a week

  • Picks-up supplies from vendors and stock warehouse, monitors stock, and makes deliveries to fire stations. Assists with any inventory management activities needed

  • Fills air cylinders.

  • Inspects and maintains ambulance stretchers in safe working condition; makes repairs, orders necessary parts, and keeps related records

  • Maintains personal safety equipment, including repairing and/or cleaning helmets, protective clothing, boots, and gloves; maintains and repairs small emergency equipment such as generators and fire extinguishers

  • Purchases parts and protective personnel equipment (PPE)

  • May coordinate repair of equipment with City's Fleet Services or outside vendors as necessary

  • Assists Emergency Equipment Technicians with repairs of fire hydrants, ladders, generators, jacks, and similar equipment

  • Performs annual hose testing; repairs hoses and nozzles as needed

  • Performs repairs on a variety of small equipment and tools, including chain saws, mowers, skill saws, and table saws

  • Provides support for Fire/EMS operations at emergency scenes such as filling SCBA bottles and performing PPE repairs

  • Operates and cleans assigned vehicles, hand and power tools, and equipment

  • As requested, assists training division with building and maintaining training aids

  • Supports and respects diversity in the workplace

  • Maintains work records as required

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Three years of related maintenance and repair experience, with one year in a Fire/Emergency environment preferred.

The ideal candidate will have the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Types and uses of tools and light equipment used in the maintenance and repair of fire station equipment. Standard safety precautions and ability to identify hazards.

  • Basic mechanical repair concepts as applied to small equipment repairs. Preventive maintenance practices.

  • Inventory Management.

Ability to:

  • Perform repair of assigned equipment, both during regular duty and emergency conditions.

  • Use creativity to effectively and efficiently solve repair and maintenance problems.

  • Operate assigned vehicles, tools and equipment.

  • Read and understand repair and maintenance manuals.

  • Work independently and prioritize and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

  • Effectively handle a variety of assignments and remain flexible to changing priorities.

  • Communicate effectively and courteously with fire department personnel, other City employees, outside vendors, and the general public.

  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions

  • Maintain work records as required.

  • Learn new processes and equipment repairs.

  • Identify hazards and follow safety procedures at incident scenes. Perform the physical duties required of the position.

  • Perform physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Work flexible shifts as required.

  • Be available and respond to emergency call-back situations as required.

  • Perform basic computer skills such as word, excel, and data entry.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months of appointment, and maintain a valid Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

A valid Oregon Class A driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

What to Expect from our Selection Process: Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required . ESF: Candidates must pass a complete pre-employment physical examination prior to receiving a final offer of employment. The examination and drug test will be conducted by the City’s contracted physician and paid for by the hiring department. Candidates who receive a positive drug test will be disqualified.
