The City of Durham’s Office of Performance and Innovation, in the Budget and Management Services Department, is seeking a curious, public service motivated intern to assist with strategic planning, innovation projects, and performance measurement and management. This is a part time position (approx. 15-20 hours per week) responsible for working with Strategic Initiatives and Innovation Team staff on supporting the implementation of the citywide Strategic Plan, innovation and continuous improvement projects, and promoting a culture of data-driven decision making. The anticipated duration of the internship is through the end of the 2024-2025 school year, with potential to extend through summer.
A highly competitive candidate will have experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis, have strong oral and written communication skills, and be curious about local government, strategic planning, and innovation.
Duties/Responsibilities
Support designing and facilitating effective meetings with key stakeholders and participants.
Research, analysis, and presentation of results.
Program and project evaluation.
Content development for the City website and social media platforms.
Collaboration with internal and external partners and assisting with employee and community engagement efforts.
Support in ongoing innovation and continuous improvement projects.
Designing and writing marketing and informational materials to clearly and concisely communicate key information.
Quantitative and Qualitative analysis of responses to the annual Resident Satisfaction Survey.
Other special project research and data analysis projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Current undergraduate or graduate student studying a field related to: Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Planning/Urban Design, Social Work, or other related area of study.
Additional Preferred Skills
Prior experience in the public sector (e.g., nonprofit, NGO, government, education) is a bonus but not a requirement.
Able to work in-person at City Hall a minimum of one day per week.
Demonstrated ability to manage and thoughtfully analyze quantitative and qualitative data and clearly communicate key findings.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel,
Experience researching and writing on an assigned topic.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Curious and a s elf-starter.
