Actalent Microgrid Systems Engineer in Durham, North Carolina

Job Title: Microgrid Systems EngineerJob Description

The Microgrid Systems Engineer provides engineering services for the design and implementation of Microgrid Applications with a special focus on Hybrid/Solar/Renewable Energy Applications. These engineering activities include professional control system engineering services associated with the design of low and medium voltage distributed energy resources (DERs). This role involves detailed engineering, technical writing, SCADA, mechanical aspects, and third-party integrations, ensuring systems align with customer or internally provided plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project scope and technical functions, including technical writing, SCADA, mechanical aspects, and third-party integrations.

  • Design and implement low and medium voltage distributed energy resources (DERs).

  • Understand and manage how the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) interacts with the grid and its use cases.

  • Develop detailed engineering plans and ensure adherence to engineering procedures and standards.

  • Act as a system integrator and understand high-level operations of microgrid applications.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field from an accredited university.

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in a power distribution engineering environment.

  • Advanced understanding of power generation and distribution.

  • Advanced understanding of solar/renewable energy equipment/system deployment, integration, and troubleshooting.

  • Field networking experience with Modbus and/or DNP3.

  • Experience designing and implementing microgrid or distributed energy resource applications.

  • Knowledge of digital multifunction relays for genset protection and electric utility requirements.

  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers from manufacturers such as Emerson/GE, Siemens, and/or Allen Bradley.

  • Proficient with ladder logic programming.

  • Understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Experience with 2-D CAD software.

  • Proficiency with industrial automation software packages.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with TIA Portal or Proficy Machine Edition.

  • Knowledge of structured programming communications and various protocols.

  • Proficient in acting as a system integrator and understanding high-level operations.

  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.

Work Environment

This position is primarily remote with occasional travel to sites for Factory Witness Testing (FWT), Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), or customer demonstrations. This role offers an opportunity to be on the cutting edge of advanced microgrid technology and contribute to the growth of a new product line within a dynamic market.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $68.00/hr.
