Job Summary

SHIFT: Monday - Friday, 6:30am CST - 3:00pm CST

As Supervisor of Surgical Support Techs, you are accountable for organizing, managing, and overseeing daily department functions. Ensure efficiency by establishing processes, monitoring staff performance, and enforcing regulations. Your job includes ensuring enough staff and resources for surgeries and scheduling. You will also maintain competencies and sterilization procedures while managing special projects when needed.

What You'll Do

Position will oversee a headcount of 20-25 staff.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • On boarding and orientation of new surgical support techs in conjunction with peri-operative education department.

  • Monitor daily responsibilities of SST’s such as stocking ante rooms with supplies and linen.

  • Intake calls for the OR’s and communicate tasks to staff in a fair and transparent manner.

  • Communicate daily with the Scheduling/Staffing supervisor to determine retractor holder needs for the next day.

  • Manage time and attendance and counseling’s for direct reports.

  • Conduct annual performance management with staff providing feedback during 1:1 meetings.

  • Manage the call schedule sign up for direct employees and communicate with scheduling/staffing supervisor.

  • Your main task is preparing for cases in vital surgery services, following current protocols and standards. You need knowledge in anatomy, surgical tools, surgeons' preferences, and technical concepts.

  • You will set up operating rooms for surgeries by arranging sterile supplies, tools, and equipment as needed.

  • Clean and shave the surgical site as needed in a sterile way. Help drape and position the patient for surgery.

  • During procedures, you provide sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons. You also hold retractor devices. You must respond promptly to the surgical team's needs.

  • You will handle surgical specimens according to protocol, preserve in solutions, inform nurse of source, and deliver.

  • You will count sponges and needles, and assist in dressing the surgical site after the procedure.

  • After the surgery, clean the operating room, replace bags, dispose of supplies, clean equipment, and complete tasks as needed.

  • You will carefully handle all instruments, including micrometric ones, wrap them ready for gas or steam sterilization.

  • The role also includes related administrative and service tasks such as transporting patients to and from surgery and requisitioning supplies.

  • We count on you to act as a mentor and resource to those learning the role of a scrub tech.

  • You will be expected to remain updated on developments in surgical equipment, trends and techniques by attending internal educational programs.

What Will Make You Successful In The Role

  • Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, surgical tools, and the preferences of surgeons, extending well beyond basic understanding.

  • Capable of making impactful recommendations about hiring and severing employment.

  • Proficient in providing training, and evaluating the performance of the team members you oversee.

  • You need basic computer skills, like Microsoft Office, data security, scheduling, and digital medical records. Email knowledge is crucial.

  • Completion of high school or an equivalent qualification, such as a General Education Development (GED) certification.

  • A minimum of three years as a Certified and Registered Surgical Scrub Technologist (CST).

  • Knowledge of Basic Life Support (BLS) required or ability to get BLS certification within first 30 days of job.
