Preference in certification may be given to successful candidates who are residents of the municipality for one month prior to the date of certification.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under supervision, an employee in this class has the responsibility for the condition of a building, or for an assigned section of a building. Work includes routine cleaning activities, semi skilled repair and maintenance tasks. Supervision may be exercised over the work of a small number of subordinate employees. When in charge of a building, responsibility is carried on a 24 hour day basis.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of grade school and one year full-time paid experience or its part-time equivalent in building cleaning or maintenance activities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NYS Class D. Driver’s License may be required. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.OSHA Blood borne Pathogens Classification: Category 2SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION:1. CLEANING TOOLS AND THEIR USES:These questions test for knowledge of various cleaning tools and equipment commonly used by custodians and janitors on the job. You will be presented with drawings of various tools and equipment. You must be able to recognize the tools and know their proper uses in order to answer the questions correctly. 2. TOOLS USED FOR MINOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR:These questions test for knowledge of various tools and equipment used for minor maintenance and repair. You will be presented with drawings of tools and equipment used for minor mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repair. You must be able to recognize the tools and know their proper uses in order to answer the questions correctly.3. HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES IN CUSTODIAL WORK:These questions test for knowledge of proper health and safety practices for cleaning, building operations and maintenance, and other areas relevant to the work of custodians and janitors. You will be presented with drawings which show work situations involving basic health and safety issues. You must be able to recognize unhealthy, unsafe, or hazardous work conditions and know how to correct them.
