Job Summary

The Research Engineering Associate I, under general supervision,

will support research in flexible pavements and pavement materials through a range of lab tests and field sample processing. This position receives specific instructions on assignment objectives and possible solutions from the project director, Principal Investigator, or higher-level research personnel. Under general supervision, the specialist will help collect field samples, prepare and test materials, and assist with specimen preparation. The engineering associate will conduct a range of tests on prepared specimens and accurately document the test results. Continued employment is dependent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.

Material Testing: Perform standard techniques and tests, including drying and sieving materials, conducting Moisture Density (MD) curves, and preparing specimens for testing. (30%)

2.

Field Sample Collection: Collect and document field samples accurately, ensuring proper storage and handling. (20%)

3.

Equipment Operation: Set up and operate testing apparatus in the laboratory or on site. (20%)

4.

Data Management: Perform data entry and use computer software to record test results. (10%)

5.

Lab Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized lab environment, including cleaning equipment and the preparation area. (10%)

6.

Additional Duties: Other duties as assigned to support lab operations. (10%)

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.

No prior experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Other Requirements

Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.

May be required to work in hot, cold, and extreme weather conditions.

Travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in performing laboratory procedures or assisting in experimental work within the field.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).

Physical strength and stamina to exert heavy force and perform repetitive tasks.

Ability to work in varied conditions, including hot, cold, or extreme weather.

Proficiency with office equipment, including computers, for data entry.
