Job Summary:
In support of management, the Engineering Foreman assists the supervisor and/or assistant supervisor in monitoring the quality, efficiency, production output, application of skill, and workload of the Building Engineering staff and contractors. Performs building engineering duties throughout University buildings, property and facilities, in accordance with University standards and procedures. This position does not require the Foreman to hire, fire, promote or take disciplinary action.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for contributing to the planning, scheduling, assigning, and monitoring Building Engineers\' and contractors\' work to assure timely and safe performance of the work and for assuring the work is completed in accordance with industry and University standards.
- Responsible for reviewing Building Engineers\' work in process to identify opportunities for on-the-spot and cross training, quality of service, safe working practices, and the efficiency of method and appropriate use of hand and technical tools, utilizing the Engineering Foreman\'s expertise.
- Assists the supervisor and/or assistant supervisor in monitoring assigned workload(s).
- Keeps supervisor and/or assistant supervisor current with issues and impediments to the progress of work assignments, bringing to light urgent and emergency priorities.
- Documents test results, HVAC related readings, \"as-builts\" prints and may assist in the preparation of daily reports as required by Management.
- Introduces new employees to the work environment. Identifies and provides training to employees on an ongoing basis.
- Uses computers or CMMS to enter and access job-related information. May be required to carry hand-held maintenance work tool, pager, and/or cell phone and respond according to university expectations.
- In absence of assistant supervisor and/or supervisor, will be expected to access building systems from home to adjust, troubleshoot or provide instructions to the Engineer on duty.
- Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment. Participates in University required safety training.
- Undertakes training related to job responsibilities and duties as deemed necessary by the University and Facilities Services.
- Capable of and may perform all duties of the Journeyman Building Engineer and Refrigeration/Building Engineer as required in accordance with shop practices.
- Performs other job-related duties as may be assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED) from an accredited institution, required.
- Completion of job-related apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training required.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years journeyman-level experience in building systems and air-conditioning maintenance or an equivalent combination of position related education and experience required.
Technical Knowledge or Skill:
- Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements required.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents required.
- Demonstrated ability to write routine reports required.
- Demonstrated ability t communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing required.
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position required.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve required.
- Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings and schematics required.
- Previous lead or foreman experience that included planning building systems maintenance, repairs and operations, directing a work crew and/or in providing skilled training in technical building maintenance preferred.
- Working knowledge of the use of computerized maintenance management and building automation systems preferred.
- Working familiarity with Chicago Building Code requirements for building systems and operations preferred.
Certifications:
- Current valid driver\'s license and must successfully complete the University\'s Motor Vehicle Records check process required.
- Other licenses or certificates needed for this position as required by law, changes in the law or other regulatory agency requirements required.
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification preferred.
