Position Summary
Southern Utah University invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position as Assistant Professor of UX/UI and Visual, Graphic, and Human-Centered Design beginning Fall 2023. This hybrid position bridges the fields of Art & Design and Computer and Information Sciences (CIS), focusing on preparing students to integrate computing, human-centered design, and creative problem-solving into digital and visual media applications.
The successful candidate will join a NASAD-accredited program and a multidisciplinary teaching environment. Our programs emphasize creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and social responsibility. Faculty members are encouraged to shape the curriculum, engage in
creative/scholarly activities, and contribute to fostering belonging and inclusion within the department, college, and university.

Essential Functions
• Teach all levels of coursework in UX/UI design, and human-centered design across digital and visual media. Develop and teach foundational design courses for first-year students, emphasizing principles of Design and Visual Communication
• Contribute to the integration of Computer and Information Sciences into creative design processes, teaching the application of computational tools and principles in design contexts.
• Maintain an active professional or creative practice aligned with the disciplines of graphic design (CIP Code 50.0409), UX/UI, or game and interactive media design
• Apply expertise in user research, interaction design, user testing, and innovative problem-solving, focusing on digital product design and other emerging platforms.
• Engage in visionary program building including courses and programs in related interdisciplinary areas.
• Recruitment and retention initiatives of both students and adjunct instructors.
• Mentor undergraduate students in creative, technical, and research-based design practices.
• Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.
Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications
• Terminal degree in a relevant field, such as MFA in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Master in Design Studies (MDes), or a terminal degree in UX/UI, CIS, or related disciplines.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in higher education.
• Evidence of professional or creative practice in design, UX/UI, or a related area (e.g., experience as a designer, art director, or creative director).
• Strong understanding of both historical and contemporary design practices. Ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and creative practices.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in user-centered design, UX/UI research, interaction design, and/or interactive media design.
• Technical expertise in design-related software and programming tools used for multimedia and interactive media applications.
• Demonstrated success in fostering an inclusive and collaborative learning environment.
