Description

Purpose of the position:

* Define project scope and objectives of instrumentation for Proposals and Capital Projects.

* Support conceptual design for production plants of air separation, CO2, O2, N2 and propose required instrumentation to optimize plant.

* Develop P&I drawings, data sheets, and specifications.

* Ensure recognized industry standards, safety standards, and various client specifications are followed and accounted for in design.

* Coordinate and review the basic and detail engineering.

* Prepare specifications for suppliers, as well as engineering and construction contractors to bid the design, construction, and commissioning of Capital Projects. Provide complete technical review of bid packages.

* Prepare turnover packages to operations including drawings, data sheets, training documents, etc.

* Coordinate and participate in plant construction, commissioning, and start-up.

* Monitor project progress and KPIs and advise stakeholders of deviations

* Participate in HAZOPs and P&ID reviews.

* Bring knowledge and experience from plant operating environment to improve best designs and implement best practices.

Principal Responsibilities:

* Works with other instrumentation engineers (internal and external) or individually in the design, specification, selection, erection, commissioning and troubleshooting of instrumentation.

* Day to day troubleshooting and oversight of the numerous outsource vendors that support Messer Americas in the design, specification, selection, erection, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

o This position is expected to be a team member supporting active projects, including:

  • Ability to select and specify instrumentation and analyzers.
  • Provide detailed drawing review and feedback to equipment OEM's.
  • Execute critical supplier design audits of instrumentation, analyzers, and control systems.
  • Ability to follow project from specification process, through design and manufacture, construction and installation, commissioning, and resolution of field issues.
  • Develop, plan, and implement QA/QC plans related to instruments from initial design through implementation including final loop testing.

* Support and execute projects in multiple geographic locations as business requires.

* Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of Messer Instrumentation and Analyzer Standards.

* Define new project scope and objectives on proposal phase, additionally support optimization of conceptual design for production plants of: Air separation, CO2, N2 and H2.

* Support development, review and approval of the control system architecture, control logic description, cause & effect diagrams.

* Maintain effective communication of progress and issues internally and externally with all stakeholders.

* Accountable for development Instrumentation and Analyzer installation drawings, data sheets, and specifications, in full compliance with recognized industry standards, safety standards, and various client specifications, including preparation of instrumentation calculations for control valves, flow orifices, relief valves and panels.

* Manage all Instrumentation and Analyzer related efforts for assigned Proposals and Projects including those executed by 3rd parties. Ensure progress is on plan and address all Requests for Information from contractors and customers.

* Responsible for preparing detail specification to Contractor hiring for construction, commissioning and startup of Capital Projects and if required coordination of on site activities.

Required Skills:

* Experience with Industrial Gases or petrochemical projects

* Experience with industrial gas equipment such as compressors, blowers, heaters, and motors

* Experience with coordination and execution of plant construction, commissioning and start up.

* Possesses an understanding of the major design engineering disciplines, i.e., Process, Mechanical Equipment, Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation, Analyzers, and Controls.

* Participation in the development and evaluation of complex engineering projects; and proficiency with Autocad software.

* Ability and interest to stay up to date with industrial practice.

* Knowledge of state and national codes and their applications.

* Ability to work comfortably as a team member and an independent contributor.

* Ability to think through technical issues while working independently and remotely.

* Ability to self-execute continuous improvement projects (re-rates, upgrades, etc.)

* Ability to train plant personal on important aspects of Instrument and Control Systems. Develop a working knowledge of risks.

* Ability to support, develop, and maintain relationships with outside specialist consultants / engineering firms.

* Experience with project management related methodologies, including cost control, planning, and scheduling, as well as quality control, and assessments is a plus.

* Languages: English; Portuguese & Spanish a plus

Basic Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering

* 5-7 years relevant experience in Instrumentation Engineering and troubleshooting instrument and control systems with at least 5 years in an operational or engineering environment.

Must be willing to travel (25-40% of time) or as business requires.
