Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on managing major program(s) or fundraising activities for the organization. Assists in developing fundraising and solicitation strategies and campaigns. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Development Leadership duties: Identifies donors and motivates donors to make gifts to the organization. Cultivates relationships with donors, maintains donor database, develops donor communication, participates in special events, and acknowledges gifts. May be responsible for developing and managing planned giving programs. Identifies donors, and motivates donors to make gifts to the organization. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that directs a department or small unit that includes multiple teams led by managers and/or team Leaders. Responsibilities typically include: ownership of short to mid-term (1-3 years) execution of functional strategy and the operational direction of the Department, problems faced are often complex and require extensive investigation and analysis, and requires ability to influence others to accept practices and approaches, and ability to communicate and influence executive leadership.

Job Overview

This position will be a leader in building a robust philanthropy effort to support the academic, clinical, educational, and programmatic priorities of Tufts Medicine across the system, which includes Tufts Medical Center, Lowell General Hospital, MelroseWakefield Healthcare, and Tufts Medicine Care at Home. This position is responsible for developing and implementing a solicitation strategy that includes prospect identification, cultivation, proposal writing, and stewardship. Builds and manages an individual major gift portfolio. As a member of the senior development team, mentors and coaches a team of frontline fundraising professionals and have budgetary responsibility for this function within the Development department.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree.

  2. Ten (10) years of fundraising experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Fifteen (15) years of experience in frontline fundraising in a prestigious, complex organization.

  2. Experience at an academic, research, or hospital/health care environment.

  3. Experience with a donor CRM.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Provides visionary and entrepreneurial leadership that drives Tufts Medicine’s culture of philanthropy.

  2. Maintains a portfolio of 50 - 60 prospects and donors.

  3. Builds the solicitation program to achieve on-going growth in both cash and future commitments of support.

  4. Responsible for the development of fundraising plans in alignment with principal programmatic priorities and full execution against those plans.

  5. Cultivates donor relationships, solicits gifts, and ensures proper stewardship, executing strategic “moves” and requests with donors and prospects to meet financial and activity goals.

  6. Identifies prospects for funding of the system’s and local entities’ priorities and plans the solicitation of those prospects. This includes working with physicians and researchers as well as senior management and volunteer leadership.

  7. Works independently and with other staff to develop fundable proposals and carries out all of the documentation required by prospective funders. Reviews all proposal budgets with capital and departmental budgeting.

  8. Supported by the Development Associate, ensures that all activity is accurately captured and tracked in Raiser’s Edge.

  9. Creates and maintains strong relationships with leaders, physicians and scientists.

  10. Translates science and program related strategies into compelling funding opportunities for donors.

  11. Supports and coaches physicians on fundraising best practices.

  12. Provides direct supervision to a team of frontline staff, providing coaching in all aspects of portfolio development and management, and aligning activity with the principal programmatic priorities of the institution.

  13. Assists in the recruitment of donors and internal volunteers to advocate for Tufts Medicine’s development efforts.

Physical Requirements:

  1. This is largely a sedentary role, which involves sitting most of the time, but may involve movements such as walking, standing, reaching, ascending/descending stairs, and operating office equipment.

  2. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate, and exchange information.

  3. Ability to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.

  4. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard.

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and close six and seven-figure gifts; proven experience and success in strategizing and leading the solicitation of six and seven-figure gifts from high net worth individuals.

  2. Demonstrated track record of fundraising success in a fast-paced, large organizational structure.

  3. Demonstrated success in collaborating with senior management, physician and clinical leadership to advance a high-level philanthropic program.

  4. Maturity to navigate complex relationships.

  5. Must have excellent communication and presentation skills.

  6. Superior organizational abilities and detail orientation.

  7. Comprehensive knowledge of all fundraising approaches, with special expertise and understanding of grateful patient model, principal and major gifts, and planned giving.

  8. Excellent verbal and written communication with both internal and external constituents.

  9. Engaged and energetic fundraiser who relishes the cultivating, soliciting, and stewardship of donors.

  10. A person with vision who can recognize and seize opportunities to advance philanthropy.

  11. Dynamic leader with the ability to build relationships and motivate individuals around a passion for Tufts Medicine’s mission.

  12. Team player who has collaborative instinct, an inclination to integrate efforts, and tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in a complex environment.

  13. Externally oriented and socially adept.

  14. High level of self-confidence, creativity, self-motivation and energy needed to undertake diverse responsibilities.

  15. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, required.

  16. Must have excellent communication and presentation skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, a strong strategic sense and the ability to collaborate across a high performing team in all aspects of fundraising, and in a campaign context within academic medicine.
