Penquis, a social services agency serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties for over 50 years, is currently seeking a detailed-oriented and motivated full-time Staff Accountant within our Central Accounting Office. As the Staff Accountant you will play a critical role in supporting the Accounting Manager and Senior Management in conducting the daily operations of the accounting department.
This is a hybrid position based out of the Bangor office, however, during the probationary period training will be required on-site.
Location: Bangor, Maine
Staff Accountant Responsibilities:
Utilize the A/R module of the accounting software to track the agency’s accounts receivable.
Process and track monthly and quarterly billings on contracts.
Electronically submitting claims to the MaineCare system, ensuring all necessary information is complete and accurate.
Monitoring claim statuses, contacting MaineCare regarding pending or denied claims and taking necessary actions to resolve billing issues.
Reviewing payments received, identifying any discrepancies and taking corrective actions.
Generating customer invoices when needed.
Reviewing outstanding balances and follow up on collections.
Assist with gathering and verifying customer details, insurance coverage and eligibility.
Staying updated on MaineCare billing regulations and procedures, including changes in coding and reimbursement policies.
Perform revalidation and changes as needed to the agency’s National Provider Identifier’s.
Staff Accountant Requirements:
Associate’s degree in accounting or related field or 4 years related work experience.
Strong understanding of medical billing practices and procedures.
Excellent computer skills, including experience in computer-based accounting applications, as well as spreadsheet and word processing programs.
Knowledge of MaineCare billing regulations and procedures, and other 3rd party insurance.
Excellent communication skills for customer interaction and claim follow-up.
Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and billing software.

The rate of pay for this position starts at $21.04 per hour, as additional compensation may be given consideration with relevant experience.
